The purpose of Student Health Services ( SHS ) is to provide appropriate, affordable, accessible and high quality primary health care to eligible students, and provide a comprehensive disease-prevention and health promotion program in the NC State University community. The major function of the SHS is that of providing outpatient care to the 34,000+ NC State students. Some level of medical care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year beginning in August and ending in May. Hours of service vary during the summer and during holidays and student breaks.

Essential Job Duties
The Student Health Services ( SHS ) Medical Assistant (MA) is assigned primarily to assist physicians and physician extenders with basic patient care, obtain and record pertinent medical health information, maintain patient data, perform basic patient care tasks, and perform treatment under the close supervision of a registered nurse or physician in the Medical and Women’s Health Clinic. This individual is responsible for maintaining needed supplies in assigned exam rooms, assisting patients with referrals, follow-up appointments and specific instructions as indicated by the provider. The medical assistant processes and prepares patients for examination, chaperones and assists the provider as needed. This individual answers the telephone and takes action according to the request. Schedules appointments according to unit guidelines and provider’s directives.

Other Work/Responsibilities
This individual problem solves referral and insurance issues. Adheres to safety health laws and regulations. Participates in emergency preparedness drills.

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Necessary Special Qualification Requirements – Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants ( AAMA ).

Departmental Required Skills
Completed Medical Assistant training program that is accredited by the accrediting bureau of Health Education School ( ABEHES ) or the commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs ( CAAHEP ) and must have certification by the American Association of Medical Assistant ( AAMA ).

Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records
Knowledge of medical terminology
Strong communication skills
Appreciation of needs of college age population (patient expectations are very high)

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Prefer experience in medical office, Women’s health clinic, student health office, ambulatory care and/or physical therapy department.

Past training in OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and CPR are preferred.

Required License or Certification
