Working under direct supervision of RN or MD, the Medical Assistant assists the Clinical Staff of the Outpatient Surgery Center Department in providing patient care in an efficient and professional manner.

1. Providing Patient Care, includes but is not limited to:
Assists patients to exam room and documents patient history, medications and vital signs.
Assists RN with triage process.
Prepares patients and assists clinicians with procedures and tests.
Conducts delegated procedures independently or with minimal supervision.
Performs venipuncture, labels, and sends specimens to lab.
Facilitates flow of patients and maximizes operational efficiency.
Performs accurate and timely electrocardiograms.
If HCA-C may Administers medications and injections as directed.

2. Equipment, Supplies and Work Environment, includes but is not limited to:
Maintains clean, stocked exam rooms.
Inventories, orders and restocks supplies.

3. Customer Service and Support, includes but is not limited to:
Obtains records from medical records or other clinics or hospitals.
Transports patients within hospital departments.
Answers questions and follows through on inquiries.
Clerical duties as assigned.
Assists and supports other staff members as needed.

Education Background
High school or GED or equivalent.

Licensure, Registration, Certification
Must be registered in the State of Washington as a Nursing Assistant-Certified or as Nursing Assistant-Registered with at least one year recent clinical experience.


Emergency Medical Technician or Medic with a minimum of six months experience.

Graduate of a Medical Assisting program and eligible for the Certified Medical Assistant certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Certification as Health Care Assistant-A in State of Washington within 6 months from hire date.
CPR certification required.
All must have completed a State of Washington approved blood borne pathogen education course.

Work Experience

Graduate of a Medical Assisting program and eligible for the Certified Medical Assistant certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).


Minimum 6 months recent Emergency Department (ED) hospital experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

6 months recent Emergency Department Medical Assistant or Health Care Assistant experience.

6 months recent clinic experience as a medical assistant with an ED or EMS (Emergency Medical Services) background
Emergency Department experience preferred.
Special Training/Skills
Ability and experience performing venipuncture, basic lab testing, EKG, wound care and irrigation, splinting, application of orthopedic assistive devices (i.e.-immobilizers, slings, crutches, etc.) and other specifically required duties.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and medications and their dosages.
Effective verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced environment with a diverse patient population; organized and efficient.
Able to work independently and with other team members.
Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit/department.

Physical Abilities
Able to move between several exam rooms for up to four hours at a time.
Able to safely maneuver patients and supplies.
Able to sit for long periods of time answering telephones, writing, and typing at the computer.
