The medical assistant is responsible for assisting in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the Physician and Campus Nurse. The MA also administers immunizations and health screenings. The MA complies with state practice acts and regulations and performs a variety of services requiring limited nursing skills. The MA participates in health promotion activities and performs related work as required. The position is part-time (19 hours a week). The MA answers directly to the Campus Nurse.
D uties and Responsibilities:
Receives students and staff in a professional manner and provides confidential care.
Interviews patients and measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height.
Prepares treatment rooms and patients for examination.
Cleans and sanitizes instruments, treatment rooms, and reception area.
Provides first aid treatments and performs routine health screenings as directed.
Schedules appointments and makes follow-up phone calls to patients.
Performs administrative tasks, completes appropriate patient forms, and provides assistance at front desk.
Assists in assessment and treatment of illness and injury using the process directed in the physician’s standing orders.
Dispenses over-the-counter medications and administers injections as directed.
Triages telephone calls from various sources regarding immunizations or medical concerns in compliance with campus regulations.
Creates patient charts and provides follow-up services, such as interoffice or community organization referrals.
Maintains accurate student health records, including immunization records, medication administration records, and individual student treatment records.
Participates in Student Life, Intramural, and Housing department functions as needed.
Utilizes computer software applications to complete reports; correspond with faculty, staff, and students; and maintain student files.
Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health, and Scope of Practice.
High School Diploma or Equivalent (Associate degree preferred)
Medical Assistant Certification
Minimum two years of work experience in direct patient care
CPR certification required
Phlebotomy Certification preferred
