The Medical Knowledge Engineer – Associate is primarily responsible for the development, implementation, validation, and maintenance of interdisciplinary knowledge bases providing clinical decision support capabilities for internally developed or vendor supplied applications. The essential purposes of this position are to create and maintain structured (executable) knowledge modules obtained from multiple knowledge sources and/or domain experts, encourage acceptable content structure and patterns according to regulatory and best practice recommendations, when applicable, and to be a liaison between knowledge base programmers and authors/end users of the knowledge.

The associate level medical knowledge engineer has basic familiarity and minimal experience with medical knowledge bases. This person works on small, defined elements of large projects. Their abilities encompass a subset of the total knowledge required within specialty area, and is in process of developing remaining skills. This position requires additional support and/or training to become fully proficient. The work is overseen by higher level technical contributors.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in clinical sciences or four years of health care experience (Education is verified and degree must be obtained through an accredited institution)
  • One year of clinical or medical informatics experience
  • Demonstrated excellent understanding of types of information used in a healthcare environment, how clinical data are produced, consumed, and transformed, and the impact clinical applications and content have on the delivery of patient care
  • Demonstrated excellent interviewing and communication skills, attention to detail, and professionalism in conduct and communication methods
  • Demonstrates proficiency with general computer use, keyboard, and mouse skills
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of electronic mail, web browsers, and Internet services
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminologies
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of project management concepts and techniques (prioritizes and executes tasks in a high-pressure environment)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years clinical information systems experience
  • Master’s degree in a clinical sciences or informatics, or six years equivalent clinical sciences or clinical information systems experience
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of medical knowledge engineering concepts and methods, including knowledge acquisition, representation, and validation
  • Demonstrated a working knowledge of relational databases, SQL, and XML schemas
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of coding systems and classifications
  • Demonstrated the ability to quickly learn, understand, and apply new technologies
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Highly self motivated and directed
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws
  • Ability to meet with content experts at their point of care
