This position is responsible for mycobacterial specimen processing, culture set-up, culture examination, and microscopy according to laboratory protocol. Accurate and prompt laboratory reports are provided by telephone and computer. This position is also responsible for preparing,testing and reporting specimens that meet the criteria for RT-PCR assay. This position provides training to other staff and is cross-trained to perform the functions of other positions within the Mycobacteriology laboratory to provide scheduling flexibility and critical backup support. This position is required to perform quality control and preventative maintenance activities on a daily basis to ensure the quality of patient testing results and is responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of reagents and materials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Must have a broad knowledge of classic and molecular microbiology methods and Interpretation. Must be capable of independent work with general supervision. Must be capable of understanding and following complex oral and written instructions. Must be able to express oneself clearly both verbally and in writing. Must not have any predisposing conditions that would render them susceptible to infectious disease, i.e., must not be immunologically compromised. Must have a theoretical knowledge of certain infectious diseases and the laboratory tests used in diagnosis. Must also understand immnunochemical, biologic, and medical practices and principles. Must be able to perceive colors normally and any eyesight deficiencies must be correctable. Visual acuity is required in performing some tests. Posses organization skills that will allow coordination of multifaceted testing activities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of medical laboratory experience; or completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and two years of medical laboratory experience; or high school or General Educational Development diploma and four years of applicable medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
