The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) is responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to:
Scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults
Entering no-show information
Monitoring the electronic wait list
Preparing for clinic visits
Monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility
Ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate work load credit
Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information
Processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals
Performing basic eligibility, co-pays, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Time-in grade Restriction: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is not more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the previous 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
GS-5 Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade ( GS-4 ) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but is not limited to: medical clerk and /or medical receptionist experience gained in a physician's office, hospital or clinical setting with scheduling experience and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties as described in this announcement.
Applicants may substitute successful completion of four (4) years education above high school level for the experience required at the GS-5 level.
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. O nly education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5 . For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Candidates must demonstrate the KSA's listed below in your resume':
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.
Ability to operate computerized programs and databases pertaining to clinic procedures in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data, access electronic medical records, schedule appointments and follow-up procedures.
Ability to assess patient care needs, perform tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work.
