IRREGULAR TOUR; BASED ON THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE
The incumbent serves as a Medical Support Assistant in Nursing Service. You will be responsible for initiating and carrying out a variety of clerical duties associated with patient care and treatment.
You will make routine administrative decisions and give advice to the clinical team members in administrative functions of the ward unit and Department of Veterans Affairs policies.
Area of Consideration:
The initial area of consideration is this Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). Management retains the right to select any appropriate recruitment methods such as current Federal employees serving on a career or career-conditional appointment,

Duties of a MSA includes, but are not limited to the following:
Interprets a wide variety of physicians orders for inpatient and outpatients
Extracts Encounter Forms/Prescription Profiles for clinic visits
Check in/out clinic visits
Set up suspense files necessary for processing orders for recurring test
Function independently in the ward/unit setting
Maintain patient clinical records from admission to discharge or transfer
Record telephone messages
Sort and distributes mail
Serves as a point of contact for the ward
Schedule follow up appointments
Enter data Bed Management Solutions (BMS)
Education - One year above high school;
Experience - Six months experience of clerical, office or related work;
English Language Proficiency.
(1) Knowledge of Current MSA Practices. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with current MSA responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MSA.
(2) Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MSA experience at the next lower grade level.
(3) Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MSA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MSA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
FINAL GRADE/SALARY DETERMINATION IS MADE BY PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS BOARD (PSB) RECOMMENDATION, HR TECHNICAL REVIEW, AND MEDICAL CENTER DIRECTOR APPROVAL. IF THE PSB FOR THIS OCCUPATIONAL TITLE/SERIES HAS NOT CONVENED AT THE TIME OF ACCESSION THEN THE POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR THIS POSITION WILL BE USED TO ASSIGN THE GRADE (GS - 05).

The work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, etc. Periods of sitting may be required for typing and data entry. Walking to various locations of the medical center with records of patients, consultations, supplies, etc is necessary.
