Merchandiser – Taylorville, IL
This is a full time exempt position.

MAIN FUNCTION: Reporting to the Commercial Manager of the location (or General Manager), this is an intermediate level position which is part of the merchandising team for the location. The position, acting as part of the team, will be accountable for the procurement of raw materials and/or the marketing of finished products to achieve optimum financial results. The position is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with accounts, including the handling of logistics, accounting, and other customer related issues. Contributing to the risk management strategy, as well as the barge freight and CIF NOLA markets, will be an integral part of this position. As an intermediate member of the merchandising team, this position requires a higher level of strategic thinking, market knowledge and employee development than an entry-level position.

Primary Job Duties:
  • Follow CIF NOLA basis and barge freight markets – advise trading activity accordingly.

  • Responsible for input on spreads for all commodities.

  • Service multiple commercial and farmer origination accounts.

  • Sales accounts covering all commodities (wheat milling, Export desks, Ethanol plants).

  • Identify and execute arbitrage opportunities for all commodities for all markets.

  • Grow and develop fob origination and trading for region.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED:
  • Is able to prepare & analyze basic profit & loss and other divisional month end reports

  • Strategically seeks out new business that would profitably enhance company assets

  • Builds & maintains relationships with a wide range of customers, including premium and volume accounts

  • Understands customer requirements in order to collaborate and add value to both companies

  • Is able to prepare & present reports to management detailing customer issues & opportunities

  • Maintains a clear customer account list and provides detailed background information in files

  • Handles all accounting related issues in a timely manner to ensure good customer service

  • Attends internal training sessions to learn more advance merchandising skills & systems

  • Ensures the most cost efficient transportation and logistics

  • Develops a good working knowledge of freight spreads and competitor activities

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

University degree in agriculture or business (i.e. economics, finance, accounting), supplemented with a minimum of two (2) years experience in the marketing of commodities and related food, feed and/or fuel products in North America. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Demonstrated capacity to excel within high risk, fast-paced work environment. Proven ability to assess risk and exercise sound judgment in making decisions. Demonstrated negotiation and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the domestic & international trade. Proven ability to manage effectively within a team based work environment. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with end-users, suppliers, and internal customers. Computer competent, with demonstrated ability in the use of spreadsheet, database, and word processing software. Applications within a windows based operating environment. Individual must be committed to corporate ethics policies & safety programs. Must have experience managing a cash grain position, Agris experience a plus, 3-5 years experience in the grain business.
