This is an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgist

located in Columbus, IN.

Applies highly specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices to assigned areas and projects in the selection of materials for engineering and manufacturing processes to attain design objectives. Reviews designs, specifications, and cost parameters in order to recommend the most appropriate materials. Works with multi-disciplinary teams to develop solutions to material and manufacturing needs. Leads large or multiple engineering projects. Performs as the local technical expert for one or more engineering specialties. Solves complex problems impacting multiple projects. Communicates with and influences key external stakeholders and business leaders. Drives and manages system level requirements for projects or programs. Makes critical project or product related decisions. Collaborates with industry peers within their discipline. Advances the state of the practice for the technical discipline. Sets strategic direction for a program or technical discipline. Advises and transfers knowledge of engineering discipline; coaches and mentors less experienced engineers. Advises leaders regarding the identification and resolution of complex problems.

Substantial relevant work experience and required (Prefer 7+ years of Metallurgy experience), including leadership of small projects or portions of large projects.

Position requires a technical degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or related technical field with related experience.

Looking for a self-starter, with a passion for delivering materials and process solutions to product design, quality and manufacturing problems. Expertise in one or more of the following production processes: heat treating, PVD coatings, grinding, machining, surface cleaning, raw material quality control, electro-chemical machining, laser machining, electrical discharge machining.

The position will lead and direct all Metallurgical activities to support VPI program critical milestones. Travel to suppliers, technical conferences and global sites (both domestic and international) will be required and up to 20% of time. Must have knowledge of ferrous materials i.e. high strength alloy and tool steels. Experience performing supplier quality audits, sourcing, and specifications, including review of supplier’s control plans. Position does not currently have direct employees, but does require indirect leadership skills and in the future may include managing a small group of engineers.
