This is technical work characterized by a substantial volume of basic maintenance and technical tasks involved in performing accurate readings of water meters. Incumbent also performs a moderate volume of clerical duties in the data entry of meter data and maintenance of meter records and reports.

Primary Duties:
  • Read, record and input water consumption data on all water meters including residential, commercial and industrial water meters on an assigned route. Each day approximately up to 350 to 400 meters are read and/or serviced, which requires Meter Readers to walk 1 to 10 miles and drive 1 to 40 miles.
  • Operate, upload and download a hand-held portable computer.
  • Monitor readings to detect abnormal or fluctuating consumption patterns, and note irregularities for billing department.
  • Investigate and respond to customer complaints regarding meters or water problems; refer complex complaints or problems to supervisor.
  • Geographically locate water meters using a City map.
  • Walk and drive a vehicle to various meter locations. Maintain City right-of-way to meters by clearing debris, clearing brush, removing grass, leaves and other obstructions as necessary.
  • Inspect meters during readings for damage, leaks, unauthorized connections; mis-readings, non-functioning meters, and new sprinkler systems. Replace broken meter box lids.
  • Lock off meters for non-payment or service termination.
  • Strictly adhere to city’s safety procedures as required.
  • Assure availability for 24-hour emergency call-out to perform water watch duties.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
  • Due to internal and external customer service needs, incumbent must be able to work a full time schedule, on- site (appropriate City work sites).
  • Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
  • Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.
  • Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, developers, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.
  • Show initiative in performing job functions.
  • Meet deadlines for assigned tasks.
  • Operate a motor vehicle using a standard driver’s license.
  • Work independently with little direction.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. One year of meter reading experience preferred. Must possess valid Washington State Driver's license without pending risk of loss at time of employment.

Additional Information:
Works mostly outdoors, sometimes during inclement weather. Required to sit, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hands-to-finger, feel or handle writing utensils, and computers which require repetitive arm, wrist and hand movement. Reading meters requires considerable physical activity including lifting up to 50 pounds. Some meters are located in vaults or other areas difficult to access, requiring standing and reaching with arms and hands, climbing, balancing stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending and/or crawling or close proximity to fast moving vehicular traffic. Visits sites that require walking on uneven, rocky, or rough ground. Specific vision abilities include close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and to adjust focus. Employee is required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. Employee is frequently required to perform work in confidence and under pressure for deadlines, and is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.
