This is field work, reading meters and keying the amounts of water and electricity consumed by utility customers of the City.
The Meter Readers normally follow designated routes, receiving specific work instructions from a supervisor. The main responsibility of this work is the accurate reading and keying of water and electricity consumption of utility customers. Meter Readers also perform cut-on and cut-off utility service and assist with the work in the Finance and Dothan Utilities Departments as required. Assignments include frequent public contact, sometimes involving complaint situations, which the employee must meet with patience and tact. Unusual questions and complaints are referred to the supervisor for explanation or decision.

Essential Job Functions:
Reads meters, of water and electricity customers, and keys reading into hand held devices.
Checks meters to insure that they are functioning properly; reports defective meters to the supervisor for repair or replacement.
Performs cut-on and cut-off services for all utility customers of the City; makes special readings of water and electric meters, and terminates service for non-payments as instructed.
Checks to determine consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases to the supervisor.
Assists the Finance and Dothan Utilities Departments in the performance of additional duties as needed.
Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.
Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the City’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by the City of Dothan.
Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other hours per day or hours per week as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must perform duties onsite, except those job duties which are customarily or by their nature performed offsite (such as offsite work meetings with City customers, clients or citizens, making deliveries to designated destinations, traveling to field offices to meet with subordinates or conduct training, etc.)

Perform basic arithmetic including multiplication and division of fractions and decimals.
Operate a motor vehicle safely.
The incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk in varying climatic conditions; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; keyboard; see clearly; hear; read and write; walk; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; ascend and descend stairs or ladders; occasionally lift or carry moderately heavy objects between 21-50 pounds; grasp and hold objects; and drive a vehicle.
Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent.
Six (6) months of recent experience using a computer or a computerized tracking, recording, and/or inventory system.

Condition of Employment/Promotion/Transfer
Must complete and accept Certification of Understanding & Condition for employment Form.
Necessary Special Requirements :
Possession of a valid operator driver's license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA09/10/01)
Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).

Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standard which includes drug/alcohol testing.
Written examination for the position of Meter Reader is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16, 2013. NOTE: An applicant on vacation, military leave, etc., is responsible for attending the examination on the date scheduled.
The Written Examination for the position of Meter Reader includes accurate meter reading, accuracy with numbers, arithmetic calculations, understanding and interpreting information, public relation and interpersonal skills and safe work practices. The exam will take place at the Dothan Civic Center.
