Performs work of routine difficulty involving the reading of water meters, recording water usage and maintaining and replacement of damaged or inoperable water meters. Will also assist with Field Service orders, involving the investigation of water and wastewater service complaints including water turn-ons and turn-offs, meter sets, hydrant meter installation and relocation, based on service orders requested locally; and by the Customer Call Center.
Reads water meters on an assigned route. Records water usage in an electronic meter reading device. Inspects meters for proper operations, reports damage or malfunctions, makes minor repairs and replaces meters as required. Assists utility workers with the repair of water distribution systems. Occasionally assists in the training of new meter readers. Will also do field services duties such as investigate customer complaints regarding such matters as high meter readings, noise, leaks, water quality, sewer line blockages, odors, low/high water pressure, etc. Determines problems and takes appropriate actions to resolve them. Assists customers in locating water leaks. Inspects water meter connections for leaks and replaces material as needed to repair leaks. Installs, changes, and inspect water meters. Performs other work as required.
Candidate must have ability to write legibly and make simple mathematical calculations accurately. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability work quickly and accurately to read large meter routes in assigned shift. Must have knowledge of use of tools and equipment used in the water and wastewater field. Ability to effectively and courteously communicate with the public and fellow associates. Ability to use water pressure gauges and other metering and measuring devices. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and to use electronic data base to process work requests. Ability to complete necessary reports legibly and accurately. One (1) year related work experience in the water distribution field. Prior meter reading or field customer service experience is preferred. High School diploma or equivalent. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Class D driver license. Must already have or obtain within one year an ADEQ Grade 1 Water Distribution certification.
This position is subject to, callback, overtime, weekend/holiday emergency call outs and call duty. There are periods of continuous stooping, bending, walking, shoveling and sweeping. May be exposed to insects, animals, reptiles, dust, pollen, chemicals, water and sewage. This position requires the employee to be at work every day and on time; work safely and perform work in a positive and harmonious manner with fellow employees and the public; project a positive image in dress and demeanor to the public. Must be able to tolerate extreme heat.
