Meter Reader - Full Time
Meter Reading offices are located in the following areas: Aurora, Ottawa, DeKalb, Schaumburg, Elgin, Rockford, Freeport, Dixon, Crystal Lake, Ingleside, Glenwood, Crestwood, Kankakee, Glen Ellyn, Bellwood, Des Plaines, Joliet, Bloomington, Paxton, Yorkville.
Meter Readers endure an extreme amount of physical activity. Readers work outdoors, year round through severe weather conditions such as rain, snow, extreme cold and extreme heat. Meter Readers are expected to obtain accurate meter readings for 300-1200 residential and commercial customers each day. To achieve this goal, Meter Readers walk between 5 to 10 miles each day while bending, stretching, kneeling, and crawling to reach meters that are located in basements, behind bushes, beneath decks, etc.
Meter Readers must read maps in rural and non-rural areas and may encounter insects, rodents, and dogs on a daily basis.
$14.77/hr. Salary increases to $17.38 post probationary period.
Typically from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Depending on department workload, evening and Saturday overtime can be scheduled with little or no notice.
- A valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record
High school diploma or equivalent
- Candidates must have the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, year round.
- Previous outdoor experience such as a mail carrier or construction worker is a plus.
7:00 am to 3:30 pm for the first initial 3 to 8 days of employment. Training will take place in our Naperville, IL facility.
We are a union shop, regardless of previous experience or performance; all promotions are seniority based. Employees can bid on available positions and the employee with the most seniority is offered the position. The employee’s flexibility to work in different locations, (i.e. Rockford, Joliet, Aurora) will determine how quickly s/he may promote. A successful Meter Reader is reliable, prompt, dependable, independent, responsible, persistent, energetic, goal oriented, accurate and able to work with minimal supervision.
