This position is located in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD), Atlanta, GA.

DUTIES: Back to top As a Microbiologist you will:
  • Perform microbiology and related fields support with in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous microorganisms and biological agents.
  • Perform recurring, well-precedent standard techniques to identify and characterize biological and/or other agents that cause a number of diseases.
  • Ensure the full range of routing methods, procedures, techniques and applicable quality controls are correctly conducted.
  • Ensure proper collection of data and conduct experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments.
  • Ensure that incoming specimen are processed and triaged maintaining "chain-of-custody."
  • Prepare routine reports on scientific investigations, studies and projects.
  • Acquire and organize materials and information to carry out study procedures for assigned projects.
  • Calibrate and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies.
  • Perform experiments in accordance with standard methods and techniques.
  • Evaluate progress of the experiments to determine whether data generated are accurate and valid.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Back to top Basic Qualification:

A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

GS-7; 1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.

OR

GS-9; 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

In addition to meeting the basic qualifications above applicant must meet the minimum qualifications below:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-7: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined below.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience following laboratory procedures and processes to carry out a variety of studies related to microorganisms and/or biological agents.

GS-9: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined below.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience following standard operating procedures (SOP) and processes and using laboratory information systems to perform and monitor the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures for a variety of studies related to microorganisms.

Foreign Education : Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
