We are currently seeking a Molecular Diagnostics Technician I for the Silver Spring, Maryland area.


  • Assist in research and development of new detection assays and maintain cross training in a number of detection assays.
  • Independently execute and optimize a variety of molecular techniques for arthropod vectored pathogen detection including sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, MAGPIX, sequencing, primer and probe design and real-time PCR analysis.
  • Perform data analysis, write brief data summaries, and contribute to publications and presentations at meetings.
  • Ensure and facilitate open lines of communication and teamwork among the various people and departments/branches involved in project collaborations.
  • Maintain inventory records and reagents.
  • Handle all department orders to ensure timely delivery of necessary project materials.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory notebook for inspection by department chief.
  • Perform arthropod microinjections and dissections as necessary, in order to infect samples and confirm presence of pathogen in samples, respectively.
  • Train students and support technicians to perform assays and individual projects and to record/analyze data in a regulatory compliant manner.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure timely calibration with GLP regulations.
  • Complete weekly safety report and cleaning and contamination control audit of GLP laboratory, including daily cleaning/inspection of GLP lab and proper record of all required documentation.
  • Performs light duties and other related duties as required and assigned.
  • Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.

  • BS in a biologic science or equivalent with significant training/experience.
  • College training in biology, general chemistry, general microbiology and molecular biology.
  • Lab experience and/or training especially in molecular biology. GLP experience a plus.
  • Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
