Position Summary
The Mortgage Loan Underwriter is responsible for approving or denying first and second mortgage loans. Responsibilities include evaluating credit worthiness of the applicant, reviewing all applicable information and documentation for completeness and accuracy, applying internal and secondary market guidelines, ensuring fraud detection practices are in place during the review process and interacting with the loan originators and processors to make appropriate loan decisions.

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Review, examine and underwrite mortgage loans to ensure soundness, business value and compliance.
Assess loan attributes and documentation for soundness and accuracy to ensure that the loan adheres to internal and secondary market guidelines.
Review and evaluate data to ascertain loan viability and identify risk issues and potential fraud.
Evaluate debt ratio, loan-to-value ratios, credit score, property valuation and various other factors.
Determine and document loan conditions and communicate requirements and/or decisions.
Assist in identifying, recommending and/or negotiating alternative loan requirements, funding and/or loan-structuring solutions.
Apply specialized knowledge to the interpretation of loan and underwriting criteria and the determination of underwriting decisions and final courses-of-action.
Identify and recommend alternatives regarding loan-structuring and financing solutions.
Review and analyze special conditions, loan deficiencies and exception-requests to determine appropriate courses-of-action. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:

College degree or equivalent work experience
Knowledge of underwriting process and procedures with previous underwriting experience
Prefer a complete understanding of various mortgage servicing systems
High level of customer service and interpersonal skills
Strong business acumen
Strong problem solving skills
Demonstrated initiative
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office software)
Effective oral and written communication skills
Displays professionalism
Teamwork oriented
