Performs intermediate skilled work in the operation and general servicing of medium weight motorized vehicles and equipment; does related work as required. work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision may be exercised over public service workers and refuse collectors and other staff as assigned.
Essential Job Functions*:
Moderate to heavy lifting up to 75 lbs.; Ability to work in varying climatic conditions and withstand offensive odors; Ability to sit and drive for extended periods. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for deputy perception, peripheral vision, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and hazards.
Operates rear-loading garbage compactor and "roll-off" type refuse truck; Operates boom truck, street sweeper, backhoes, loaders, compactors, rollers, sewer cleaning and related equipment; Operates bucket trucks, tanker trucks, sludge disposal, storage and transfer equipment, bobcat, bush hog and dump trucks; Operates electrical and diesel pumps; Trims, removes, fells and prunes trees, shrubs, etc. and uses the necessary tools and equipment to perform the duties of tree trimming to include ladders, power, band, block and tackle, and hydraulic saws; Uses chippers, log splitters and stump grinders; Performs general service duties and makes minor repairs to assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operating efficiency; Records operating data and maintain accountability of log sheets, supplies and miscellaneous items to comply with section requirements; Assists in training and instructing other personnel in proper operation and utilization of vehicles and equipment in order to maintain skilled operating section; Coordinates assigned duties with other department personnel in accordance with policies and standards; Complies with health, safety and performance standards to maintain compliance with department requirements; Assists with snow and ice removal; Responds to emergency situations as directed; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Assists in building and ground maintenance activities; Assists with utility, street and related maintenance and repair; Assists in street painting and marking; Assists with maintenance of traffic control devices.

Thorough knowledge of the safe use and preventive maintenance of medium construction equipment; Thorough knowledge of the occupational health and safety hazards, traffic laws and regulations governing solids equipment operators; Ability to proficiently and skillfully operate medium to heavy duty motorized equipment and vehicles; Ability to read simple blueprints; Ability to prepare and maintain written records and log data; Ability to identify hazardous waste and material; Ability to set up work zones; Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of medium duty motorized equipment, with some experience in working at heights and proper trimming of trees.
Special License and Certificates:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid class A commercial drivers license with department/division endorsements within six (6) weeks of employment; May require ability to obtain confined space license; May require certification as a flagger. May be required to obtain electrical clearance tree trimmer certification.
