The Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Network Engineer . The Network Engineer is responsible for managing all aspects of the Department of Medicine network infrastructure and SharePoint environment, including design, architecture, availability, reliability, monitoring, and security. This position plays an integral role in the development of strategies for optimal infrastructure reliability, stability, Security and performance. The Network Engineer must be able to work with very little supervision in a highly charged and fast-paced environment. This position will also assist the Department of Medicine IT Services Director with systems engineering for a multi-departmental network platform.
This position reports to the Director of Departmental Computing.
The Network Engineer is a primary resource for supporting a complex organization of educational, research and clinical programs throughout the entire Department. Network Engineer implements and continually improves the services of the divisions that have become an integral part of the Department’s success. The Network Engineer will be responsible for providing best practice support for end users and the oversight, mentoring, scheduling and task assignments of all maintenance activities, while helping to assure that the services provided are compliant with all UWMC Policies. The network establishes connectivity throughout a widely dispersed Department and forms a solid foundation for an environment where information and data can be centralized and shared between faculty and staff in a timely and efficient manner. It is the primary responsibility of the Network Engineer to support this infrastructure at all times to the best of his/her abilities.
Network Systems Engineering
The Network Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining an information systems strategy that supports the Department of Medicine goals and objectives. Responsibilities include:
Provides day-to-day support of the network infrastructure.
Leads and assists the Director of Departmental Computing in complex network design, configuration and implementation of projects in association with a cutting-edge network platform implemented across a multi-departmental production environment.
Providers Tier 2 support of production network and occasional engineering network issues and perform as the network infrastructure Subject Matter Expert (SME).
Hands-on, leads and assists the Director of Departmental Computing with physical and logical network design, advanced configuration and maintenance of routers, switches, load-balancers, content-delivery devices, firewall/security devices, and all other network equipment.
Working knowledge and primary resource for Exchange, DNS, DHCP, Firewall, File Server, SAN / NAS Data Storage and Terminal Server implementations and administration.
Exchange server maintenance, support and troubleshooting to assure end users experience no outages.
Terminal Server security configuration, implementation and administration.
Domain Controller security configuration implementation and administration.
Oversees and monitors the health of the Department of Medicine server and network infrastructure, tracks and maintains maintenance records for the Department of Medicine system infrastructure hardware including warranty and support renewal dates.
Oversee and recommend new hardware acquisitions as needed for the growth, stability and scalability of the Department of Medicine network and infrastructure in a cost effective manner.
Maintain records related to passwords for network administration and service accounts along with the systems and applications that are dependent on them in a secure format, also document the processes for password changes on Department of Medicine supported systems and applications.
Maintain records and contact information related of External and Internal dependencies such as external MX records, other organizations access points, agreements and configurations, Etc.
Oversee all backup systems and participate in the planning and implementation of backup related tasks, procedures and disaster recovery policies for Department of Medicine and related supported system.
Lead in troubleshooting and resolving network related issues in a time and cost effective manner to minimize end user down time.
The Network Engineer is responsible for leading and assisting with the installation, configuration, maintenance and management of the Department of Medicine SharePoint Environment, Responsibilities include:
Provide day-to-day support of SharePoint in a highly collaborative team environment.
Oversee the SharePoint Server Farm infrastructure, user permissions and application deployment – taking the administrator role and assists the Director of Departmental Computing in implementing SharePoint across the Department of Medicine IT supported Departments and Divisions. Supports the installation, configuration, security, operation, and maintenance of all web portal servers, equipment, and other software related to the SharePoint infrastructure.
Participates in the planning and execution of tasks related to the evaluation of new SharePoint based initiatives (Upgraded Versions, Third-Party Solutions, and Integration with additional Enterprise Systems).
Creates, provisions, configures document libraries, SharePoint Lists, Libraries, Web Applications and Site Collections. Perform typical system administrative activities such as site creation and governance, user training and mentoring.
Technical support of eForms, including form libraries, their purpose and related workflows.
Coordinate with the SharePoint Team in standardizing and optimizing the way data/information is stored and retrieved. Play an integral role in the development and maintenance of a SharePoint Governance, Topology and Taxonomy plan.
Work with the SharePoint Team (project manager and developer) to design and develop solutions to address business needs and opportunities, and propose changes that would make the SharePoint environment a more effective solution. Examine requirements documents and create technical design documents, unit test, system test and implementation plans for small to complex projects.
Maintain and administer Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Farm, including daily monitoring, troubleshooting and performance analysis; as well as perform as the SharePoint Subject Matter Expert (SME). Provide technical guidance to the team in the technologies related to the development and support of an Enterprise SharePoint environment (understanding relationship with Active Directory, SQL, IIS, etc.).
Use judgment and creativity to assist the SharePoint Team in designing a technically feasible cost effective approach that meets the requirements/specifications provided by Division units.
Maintain current industry knowledge of development concepts, best practices and procedures for SharePoint solutions.
Other Duties and Project Work
Perform other duties and ad hoc projects as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science AND 2-3 years progressive experience in Microsoft Windows server technology and system administration including experience with common software tools, major hardware platforms and IT Industry best practices.
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, user liaison skills and personal interaction abilities.
Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
Demonstrated ability to exercise good independent judgment in the application of computing policies.
Experience installing and administering Windows Server 2008/r2.
Experience with Active Directory and Exchange 2010
Experience installing and administering Windows SharePoint 2010, functional experience with MOSS 2007.
Experience configuring and administering Microsoft IIS web servers.
Experience with administering Microsoft Hyper-V environments.
Experience working with Microsoft SQL server 2005 and 2008/r2.
Knowledge of the features and architectural design of SharePoint2010, Windows SharePoint Services, InfoPath, Word Forms, Web-Parts and Windows Workflow Foundation.
Experience deploying, configuring, managing, administering and monitoring SharePoint.
Thorough understanding of Enterprise Portals, Collaboration Tools, Enterprise Search, Document & Content Management.
Experience with Microsoft DPM Backup system
Experience with Backup Executive Backup systems
Professional in appearance, communication style, and presentation skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and maintain productivity with minimal supervision.
Time management, multi-tasking, detail-orientation and organizational skills and a positive attitude to thrive and succeed in a fast-paced environment.

Familiar with the principles of Information Security and system logging
Strong knowledge of Microsoft OS Versions starting with Windows XP.
Strong knowledge of Macintosh Leopard and newer Macintosh OS Versions.
