National Governors Association, the bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors, seeks a student in a graduate program to serve as an NGA Scholar for a 12-week summer internship beginning in June 2013 and ending in August 2013.

The intern will participate in the ongoing activities of the NGA Office of Management Consulting and Training (OMCT) which provides critical operational and management services to governors, governors’ spouses and their senior staff members. OMCT provides assistance on the leadership and management of state government and the organization, staffing and operation of the governor’s office.


The intern will work with OMCT on the following dedicated projects:

Executive Residence Policies and Procedures; Staffing Levels and Budgets (Survey): assist OMCT with conducting a survey of governors’ spouses’ staff and executive residence managers and analyzing the survey responses regarding executive residence management policies and practices, and staffing levels and budgetary/funding issues of Offices of Governors’ Spouses and Executive Residences.

Transition and the New Governor (Publication Updates): assist OMCT with reformatting and updating transition publications in advance of the 2014 election cycle.

Extensive Research Library (Research and Writing): assist with OMCT’s efforts to reorganize existing resources and create new documents for our research library collection.

Creation of Extranets (Research, Technology and Writing): assist with OMCT’s efforts to develop extranets that allow governor’s senior staff access to valuable documents in our research library.

Governors’ Office Operational Guides (Publication Updates) – assist with OMCT’s efforts to reorganize and update function specific operational manuals for governors’ key staff members.


We are in search of an intern with an interest in state government and public administration/management, especially in learning about U.S. governors and the roles and responsibilities carried out by governors and their staff to govern and manage effectively.

Applicants must possess exceptional oral and written communications skills, research skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and exhibit professionalism.

At least one year of graduate level studies in public administration/management or a related field.
