The Nanotechnology Outreach Coordinator (NOC) will manage and facilitate CNSE’s community and youth scientific outreach efforts. The NOC will be responsible for three primary functions. 1) The Afterschool STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Mentoring Program. This program trains qualified graduate students and post-doctoral students engaged in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines to facilitate afterschool science programs for 4th through 8th grade students attending schools in high-needs areas around the Capital Region. 2) Operational oversight of the CNSE-Girls Inc. Eureka! ® Nano program. The Eureka! ® Nano program at CNSE features an intensive summer camp experience with yearlong follow up programming. 3) Development of scientific outreach modules, kits, programs, and presentations. The development and creation CNSE outreach materials will allow for deeper and wider community impact.

Duties will include but not be limited to:
  • In conjunction with the project team from SUNY, Empire State College, and the New York Academy of Science, this position will, recruit, interview, accept, and place cohorts of Mentors at afterschool sites in the region of the individual SUNY campus.
  • Coordinate and facilitate training through existing contractors in STEM content knowledge and classroom management for novice educators who are young scientists
  • Initiate and cultivate relationships with afterschool program providers and other partnering organizations
  • Support Mentors and prospective mentors:
    • Provide guidance in effective teaching strategies, lesson modification, and classroom management
    • Facilitate communication between Mentor and site staff
    • Schedule and execute site visits to each afterschool placement
    • Order and prepare supplies for Mentors
  • Coordinate summer and yearlong CNSE-Girls Inc. Eureka!® Nano program.
    • Manage resources, order supplies, coordinate curriculum and schedule
    • Coordinate CNSE and Albany NanoTech Internship opportunities for Girls Inc.
    • Be a member of the CNSE-Girls Inc. Eureka!® Nano program Design team.
    • Develop CNSE outreach activities manual.
    • Attend STEM related conferences to learn and share best practices.
  • Actively participate in community partnership outreach events (Trinity Alliance, CMOST, etc.)
  • Collect scientific outreach data and share results.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in a STEM discipline from a college or university accredited by the US Dept of Education or other internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • At least four years of experience in education with at least one of those years devoted to informal education/outreach.
  • 2+ years Education program/project management experience
  • Knowledge of the area public school system and educational standards
  • Strong interpersonal skills -- ability to easily and quickly develop rapport with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility and ability to problem solve
  • Passion for furthering the development of science education and the opportunities for at-risk youth
  • Candidates must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population.
