The senior network engineer contributes to the long-term development of the University's
enterprise-wide, complex and heterogeneous data communications systems, including
LAN and WAN. This position works with the Information Technology network engineering
team led by the lead Network engineering to maintain the operational stability
of, provide technical support for and assist in the design of the University's
enterprise data network. In addition, a primary focus for this position within
the Networking Engineering team will be the operation and maintenance of security
related devices (e.g. firewalls, network admission control, load balancers, logging
servers, VPNs).

This position will work with staff in the Information Security Office, Computer
Operations, Administrative Systems, and other groups in coordinating services
and providing appropriate guidance.

The activities of this position must support the Mission and Goals of Information
Technology and the University. The senior network engineer is required to create
and live by a philosophy of service as stated in the Santa Clara University's
Customer Service Statement.

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position reporting to the Manager of Networking
and Telecommunications (I.T.). When necessary, the position requires work beyond
the normal work hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays to support
projects and maintenance work.

I. Essential Duties (major functions, each accounting for 20% or more of the position)
As a member of the Network Engineering team, assist in the ongoing definition and development of the enterprise network structure, services, procedures, and policies.
Is responsible for designing the placement of, coordinating the installation of, and maintenance/operation of enterprise-wide networking equipment (including routers, hubs, switches, firewalls, routers, wireless devices, VPNs, NAC).
Has a leadership role in the implementation of several networking solutions as defined by the team lead.
Working with the team, oversees the operation of the enterprise-wide communication networks.
Provides second and third tier customer service and assistance to networking customers.
Operate and maintain network security devices and equipment including the development and implementation of firewall rules.
Develop, implement and maintain effective security procedures, configurations and monitoring as they relate to the network infrastructure and equipment.
Monitor network activity to detect, identify, and address security issues, events, and intrusions to the network. II. Specific Duties (representative examples of tasks or projects related to the essential duties listed above ):

Evaluate University business requirements to develop technical solutions.
Research and determine best practices with regards to enterprise-wide communication systems.
Prototype and evaluate network technologies and solutions.
Work with the Information Security Office to develop and deploy technologies to enhance network and electronic security visibility.
Develop implementation plans and schedules as appropriate for tasks assigned.
Manage projects related to network infrastructure design and implementation.

Perform problem analysis and resolution for network problems.
Occasionally perform on-site (in the customer's office) support to customers.
Be proactive in notifying customers of outages, changes, updates and new features.
Must accept that on occasion and depending on the situation will be required to work beyond and in addition to the traditional work schedules/hours including project work and responding to failures.
Required to wear a cell phone and pager.
Required to work non-standard hours to respond to failures, outages and scheduled maintenance.

In collaboration with the Information Security Office and the Network Engineering team, develop defenses against direct and casual network attacks and intrusions.
Develop and implement firewall and VPN security policies/rules/configurations to support data security configurations as defined and developed by the Information Security Office.
Keep abreast of networking security bulletins and issues.
Design and implement necessary network practices/procedures to support security policies.
Research and determine best practices with regards to enterprise-wide communication systems.

In collaboration with the Information Security Office and the Network Engineering team, develop defenses against direct and casual network attacks and intrusions.

Perform related duties as necessary or as assigned by supervisor.
Keeping current on technology trends through personal learning and investigation, attendance at industry conventions, presentations, conferences and training.
Utilize technologies and tools in support of the enterprise-wide network: programming, scripting, diagnostic tools and systems.
Give support to other Information Technology groups in support of their job functions. IV. III. Qualifications ( minimum required; maximum preferred ):
Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering or related discipline. An advanced degree is desirable, in particular Engineering and project management.
8 or more years experience in the operation and design of enterprise-wide communication systems with demonstrated increasing responsibilities. Education and applicable experience may contribute to years of experience.
Demonstrated experience in managing large networking or electronic security design and implementation projects.
Must be skilled as a technical troubleshooter.
Knowledgeable and experienced in various networking technologies, services and protocols that are typical of a large enterprise network including WLAN, WEP, WAP, 802.1x, 802.11, IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, NFS, SNMP, SMTP, DHCP/BootP, DNS, RIP, ARP/RARP, VPNs, VLANs, BGP, Subnets and Routing.
Knowledgeable in use of network management and analysis tools.
Experience with Cisco switches, routers, firewalls and wireless equipment is required.
Experience with Palo Alto Networks firewall is desired.
Experience with Impulse Point SafeConnect is desired.
Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are important.
Must be able to work in a collaborative, team environment.
Must be a "self-starter" and be able to proactively identify problems (or potential problems) and propose solutions. Initiative and creativity are important qualities to make the person in this position successful.
Must be able to handle and operate equipment, which can be located in racks, on tall shelves or in cabinets at heights up to 8 feet and weighing up to 75 pounds.
The University technology environment is very dynamic and challenging. A person with a wide breadth of experience and who can adapt to changes while working in a complex technology infrastructure environment is sought.
