Under limited supervision, the Network Operations Technician will participate in the maintenance of local and wide area networks, and voice networks including topology, hardware, software and interconnections to other networks. Provide guidance to customers and departments through experienced consulting, implementation, and debugging. Perform training on networking technologies for other Network Operations Center employees. Participate in evaluating, implementing, and configuring network monitoring systems. Responsible for writing, voice and data networking management software.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Installs, maintains, and operates the network infrastructure.
  • Determines and develops approaches to solutions.
  • Gives functional guidance to other team members.
  • May oversee team members performing specific tasks.
  • Documents design, operational procedures and standards for moderately complex and/or business critical network operations.
  • Prepares and reviews reports/statistics relating to University networking operations.
  • Writes all technical data not provided by the vendor or Engineering.
  • Communicate with clients concerning scheduled equipment maintenance and availability.
  • Inventory stocking and management.
  • May be responsible for the routine inspection and maintenance of cable plant and circuitry.
  • Responsible for processing of specialized requests of changes to systems.
  • Maintains network hardware and software of moderate complexity.
  • Provides input into capacity planning.
  • Responsible for the configuration of moderately complex networks.
  • Responsible for pre-installation testing.
  • Responsible for supporting implementation of moderate-scope projects or major initiatives.
  • Responsible for inventory tracking, equipment configuration, and installation of complex networks.
  • Responsible for post-installation testing and resolution of problems.
  • Provides vendor management for moderately-complex problem/issues.
  • Assigns the vendors/contractors for testing assignment or repairs.
  • Responsible for supporting implementation of moderate-scope projects or major initiatives.
  • Responsible for inventory tracking, equipment configuration, and installation of complex networks.
  • Responsible for post-installation testing and resolution of problems.
  • Provides vendor management for moderately-complex problem/issues.
  • Assigns the vendors/contractors for testing assignment or repairs.
  • May monitor performance trends and work with vendor to improve performance issues.
  • Maintains good relationships with customers, peer technical groups and other IT organizations/groups.
  • Works closely with CUIT colleagues on all tasks.
  • May direct and monitor the work of team members and or project teams.
  • May mentor and/or provide technical training to other team members.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or its equivalent related experience required.
  • 3+ years of related experience

  • Expertise in one or more technical specialties.
  • Demonstrated mastery of previous level's skills and responsibilities
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Participates in a periodic weekly 24x7 on-call rotation.
