Compensation – Union Represented Position – Local 369
Starting Rate of $24.83. Pay progresses to approximately $38 an hour in approximately 3 years.

Work Schedule:
The work day consists of eight hours and the work week consists of any five days of eight hours each. Operator Mechanics/Apprentices are required to work shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime.

Additional Information:
Location: Boston - Mass Avenue .
Training consists of two weeks of training at Mass Avenue , followed by 1 year of training at various locations returning to Mass Avenue .

Role and Scope of Position:
As an entry level Operating Mechanic, employees are engaged in an apprentice program designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform all the duties of operations, maintenance, grounds work and housekeeping of substations, network feeder stations, vaults, customer substations, those areas of generating stations, and other work areas which come under the control of the Station Operations Section. Under close, directive, or general supervision, incumbents use appropriate hand and power tools to perform tasks in connection with the operations, maintenance, repair, overhaul, installation, construction and inspection of electrical and mechanical equipment and apparatus, without limitation to the operating voltage.

The incumbent performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations for the purpose of learning standard work methods and to develop work knowledge, skills and abilities. For training and development purposes, assignments will include work of the Operating Mechanic position.

It is required that incumbents progress to the position of Operating Mechanic. To progress to the journey level position, the incumbent must satisfactorily meet the requirements of the apprentice program, including passing periodic evaluations and exams as set forth in the program.

Qualifications : High School diploma or GED required. Must pass the minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the Company. S/he must have corrective vision, normal color perception, hearing and sense of smell. Must possess a Massachusetts license to operate motor vehicles. CDL preferred. Must be able to read and write Basic English and possess skill in using basic mathematics. In addition, must possess an aptitude for operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment. Must pass Company approved EEI testing, Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) Test. A sample of the CAST test can be found at http://www.nstarcareers.com/employment_testing . Must successfully complete O&M prescreen, which consists of physical tasks requiring various types of strength and stamina and a written switching exercise. Candidates with prior electric utility experience, substation or electrical experience will be given first consideration . Background and Drug Testing is part of the hiring process.
