The new innovation center for start-ups, called Janssen Labs at San Diego, has been designed as a flexible lab environment for start-up companies pursuing new technologies and research platforms to advance medical care. Janssen Labs provides access to certain equipment and leverages site services and facilities enabling a cost efficient way for new companies to progress their scientific work.
This role is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the planning and execution of the Janssen Labs program in partnership with R&D. In addition this role is responsible for setting expectations and managing the relationship with the supplier overseeing daily operations. The position is responsible for partnering with site operations in the oversight of a broad range of services and essential functions include: developing and sustaining a long term business relationship with the supplier overseeing Janssen Labs, partnering with R&D Senior Leadership, J&J Corporate Legal and Site Operations to develop the strategy, program development & on-going provision of Janssen Labs and partnering with Site Operations to manage all facets of the service delivery model (including but not limited to, business operations and planning, compliance, facility & laboratory equipment maintenance, soft services (mailroom, housekeeping, conference room management, shipping & receiving, etc.), security, and EHS). This is accomplished through applying proven leadership abilities, experience, and knowledge while strictly adhering to regulatory/compliance procedures and requirements.
The Operations Manager is responsible for customer relationship management and the creation of valuable customer workplace experiences, develops robust Customer Relations Mgmt, gaining/maintaining the respect of the scientific community, providing periodic updates on results, solicits feedback on the program with focus on continuous improvement, cost savings and scalability and looks for opportunities to build or expand the program within the constraints outlined by legal. The position directs accountability for operational expense budgets, driving cost reductions, cost efficiencies and optimized contractor management, possesses excellent contract management capabilities, negotiating skills and provides clear direction for the selected service provider on expectations, develop and implement clear & achievable service levels with remediation and escalation on disputes. The position maintains compliance and administration of compliance programs with a focus on safety, environmental, security, and IP protection.
The Operations Manager ensures that all implemented risk mitigation strategies are being followed and adhered to, oversees all contractor delivered programs to ensure adherenance to J&J standards and policies and has principle relationships with contacts outside the company and contract service providers, licensees and regulatory agencies (where applicable). The position collaborates with Site Leadership, R&D Liaisons, Business Development, Procurement, Finance, EHS, Site Services, Maintenance, Security, Legal and others as required. Additional responsibilities / duties include: collaborating with all aspects of JJWS to insure optimized asset management & service provision, responsible for ensuring that the supplier and licensees are in compliance with all JJWS and J&J contractor safety guidelines, partners with Site Operations to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations including FDA, EPA, OSHA, and DEA and provide leadership for internal and external inspections (MAARS, ISO, AALAC, DEP, FM). The position partners with Procurement to develop and implement a cost effective program that is scalable, accurate, innovative and compliant. The position is located in San Diego, CA and requires up to 10% domestic travel.
It is required the Operations Manager possess a minimum of a BS/BA degree in Business, Science or Engineering. A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in any of these areas required (engineering, facilities management, contract management or scientific experience). It is required to possess two (2) years of demonstrated experience in managing supplier relationships. Experience with strategic relationship building and business development in a lab setting required. It is required the Operations Manager possess an understanding of strategic business development, strong English communication skills (written and oral), contract negotiation / execution and project management skills. It is required to have a broad understanding of facilities management and compliance requirements, experience working in a matrix environment, demonstrated track record with change process improvement in a dynamic environment and expertise in Contract Management and Customer Relationship Management required. Medical device, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience preferred. Regulated work environment experience preferred. The position is located in San Diego, CA and requires up to 10% domestic travel.
