JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB FUNCTION

The person in this position will provide engineering and technical support for one or more production lines to insure the efficient production of a quality product. This position will focus on maintaining and improving production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs, and changeovers. Incumbent will insure capabilities, consistency and compliance in application and use of: engineering methods, production systems/procedures, standards and plant-wide continuous improvement activities. Assure effective utilization of plant capital expenditures. Support, implement, and maintain food safety and quality practices as required through SQF. Will be responsible for completing job duties in a manner that supports all plant safety, food safety, quality and environmental practices.

JOB ACTIVITIES/DUTIES

  • Apply standard engineering techniques in the analysis of existing production lines from raw materials to finished packages.
  • Continually improve the rates, efficiencies, yields, and costs of manufacturing systems.
  • Provide leadership through production line and new product commissioning.
  • Initiate, implement, and cost justify modifications to production lines in response to equipment performance, line utilization, and product quality issues.
  • Interface with logistics, maintenance, engineering, and production to resolve equipment availability issues.
  • In conjunction with the Operation Manager and Line Manager, maintain an up-to-date assessment of the production lines capabilities and restrictions.
  • Implement procedures and practices to reduce changeover durations and frequencies.
  • Provide technical resources to all company departments and be active participants in cross-functional teams.
  • Manage engineering projects to meet performance expectations and cost projections.
  • Direct contractors when appropriate.
  • Provide training to production and maintenance personnel.
  • Prepare reports, feasibility studies, expenditure requests, etc.
  • Incorporate safety, sanitation, good manufacturing practices, HACCP, and code requirements into design work.
  • Maintain an up-to-date awareness of Federal, State, and Local engineering codes and regulations.
  • Be an active member of the process engineering team.
  • Be actively involved in the development and implementation of the long-term improvement programs such as LEAN, ICV, mass balance, 5S, etc.
  • Actively pursue cost saving initiatives and support the Product Team in their efforts to reduce costs.
  • Provide a process engineering presence on the production floor to assure interaction with team members from all shifts and appropriate process engineering support and feedback for the teams.


  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Education : Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.

    ExpeExperience : Five or more years of engineering experience in a food processing plant environment .

    Tech Technical Skills : Experienced at analyzing process data and equipment performance data to improve product quality and optimize system throughput and reduce costs. Ability to write reports and develop specifications. Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers.

    ManaManagement Skills : Must be skilled at working in a team environment. Experienced at managing outside contractors, maintenance personnel, and production personnel. Experienced at training maintenance and production personnel. Possess a working knowledge of SPC. Possess strong coaching and communication skills.

    I Internal : Exchanges information and ideas on current engineering issues at all levels in the organization. Participates in developing a vision for the future in relation to technology utilization. Develops internal metrics and measurements to communicate and recognize achievements.

    External : Develops a partnering relationship with engineering professionals and vendors to advance current and future company goals, staying current on the most progressive technologies and work techniques.

    Problem Solving : Must use team management skills to help teams reach consensus on manufacturing issues without affecting time and money constraints. Must apply engineering theory to solve process and packaging issues.

    JOB ACCOUNTABILITY

    Work Structure : Works under the general guidance of the Operations Manager, with technical input and coordination from the Process Engineering Manager. Manages multiple activities and is a member of multiple project teams.

    Responsibilities : Must manage budgets up to $1,000,000 annually. Must budget time, money, and resources to multiple activities with (sometimes) conflicting deadlines and priorities.
