Employees in this classification provide support to the Ophthalmology Specialty Clinics. Responsibilities include preparing patients for examinations, assisting the ophthalmologists during the examinations, and assuring a steady and even flow of patients through the clinic. Work is performed under direct supervision.
Screens patients, including: taking patient current and past medical history, past ocular history, medications taking, demographic data; test visual acuity; perform lensometry, autorefractions, topography, intraocular pressure measurement, and confrontational visual field tests.
Performs other eye examination elements: brightness acuity tester, potential acuity measure, keratometry, biometry for intraocular lens calculations, pupil examination for any deviation from round; instill dilation and medication drops
Assists with: procedures, injections, lasers
Performs other clinic duties, including: patient contact lens education, contact lens ordering; assists in general clinic operations; surgery scheduling; answering and returning patient calls; clean and stock exam, testing, and minor operating rooms.
Handles equipment, including: autorefractor, lenometer, tanopen, intraocular master optical coherence tomography, topographer, projector, acuity chart, blood pressure cuff, computer, and phone.
A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent.
No work experience required.
Eligibility for certification as ophthalmic assistant.
One year of experience working for an ophthalmologist.
