DESCRIPTION

Requires ophthalmology experience and/or graduate of accredited ophthalmology assistant or technician program, or completion of certification COA or COT. This is not an entry level position.

Provide technical and clinical support to Ophthalmologists. Maintain and enhance the health and well being of the patient by facilitating patient flow, screening patients, performing measurement tasks, assisting with procedures, performing telephone triage and giving instruction to patients.

DUTIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

&61607;Prepare patient and instrumentation appropriate to exam.
oRoom patient timely and accurately.
oCollect patient medical history including chief complaint.
oTake appropriate vitals and document completely and accurately.
oUpdate patient's chart and verify demographic information.
oUpdate medications, allergies, health maintenance system at time patient is roomed.
oAssist doctors as a scribe during the exam.
&61607;Screen patient and perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks in relation to:
oVisual acuity, lensometry, confrontational visual fields, stereo testing, evaluation of motility, pupillary function tests, color vision, applanation and Tonopen, advanced refractometry, retinoscopy, angle assessment, dilation of pupils, contact lens evaluation, visual field testing, pachymetry, corneal topography, OCT imaging, fluorescein angiography, LAMBDA/Retinometry and Glare testing, IOL Master and the A Scan for biometry readings and B Scan.
&61607;Prepare, set up, and assist provider with laser procedures and minor surgery.
&61607;Provide patient home care instructions and counseling.
&61607;Clarify pre-op and post-op instructions with patient.
&61607;Clarify pre-laser and post-laser instructions with patient.
&61607;Apply eye dressings, protective shields as directed.
&61607;Maintain practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
&61607;Clean and sterilize surgical instruments according to guidelines and standards.
&61607;Process pharmacy requests, patient phone calls, and provider messages appropriately.
&61607;Maintain sanitary conditions in exam and procedure rooms.
&61607;Assist in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions.
&61607;Keep exam rooms clean, and stocked with appropriate instruments, handouts, other supplies.

Telephone
&61607;Answer incoming telephone calls within five rings.
&61607;Perform initial triage of telephone calls per protocols
&61607;Handle emergency calls calmly and promptly according to established emergency protocols.
&61607;Take messages that are accurate, legible, and complete with names, dates, time, phone number, correctly document in EMR, and route to appropriate person.
&61607;Monitor the providers' schedule and keep them informed of any schedule changes including cancellations, reschedules, and no-shows.

Registration
&61607;Greet and check in patients in a friendly, organized, and efficient manner.
Verify demographic information on every patient. Document changes accurately.
Verify billing information making appropriate changes on accounts and collecting copayments, cash payments and issue receipts.
&61607;Communicate patient arrival to clinical personnel with required information.
&61607;Collect, reconcile, and balance cash receipts each day.

Scheduling
&61607;Schedule routine, soon, and same-day appointments following template guidelines for length of appointment, time of day, and appointment type.
&61607;Reschedule appointments as required by provider.
&61607;Schedule return appointments based on provider's direction.
&61607;Mail appropriate instructions to patients when necessary.
&61607;Monitor reminder list and mail reminder post cards to patients.

QUALIFICATIONS

&61607;High school diploma or equivalent.
&61607;Minimum requirements: Non-certified with less than ten years of ophthalmic experience, or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with five years or less of ophthalmic experience, or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) with less than two years of ophthalmic experience.
&61607;Broad-based ophthalmic experience
&61607;EHR experience. Epic experience preferred.
&61607;Excellent clinical skills.
&61607;Strong knowledge of proper medical chart documentation and coding.
&61607;Strong knowledge of diagnostic ophthalmic/optometric equipment.
&61607;Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
&61607;Proven record of attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
&61607;Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite) and proficient and accurate keyboarding skills.
&61607;Current CPR certification for healthcare workers.
