North East Medical Services (NEMS), a multi-specialty health care organization in San Francisco, is seeking a full-time Optometric Assistant for our Stockton clinic. Under general supervision assists the Optometrist with professional duties, performs a variety of general clerical tasks and assists patients utilizing optometic services.
Takes preliminary patient histories and assists with vision screening; does some pre-testing.
Assists patients in the selection of frames. Dispenses, adjusts and repairs glasses.
Orders and verifies prescriptions; orders frames and cases; orders supplies.
Greets patients, answers phones, schedules appointments and coordinates recalls.
Assists in providing patient education; assists with health fairs and seminars.
Handles all clerical duties for the unit including: typing, filing, maintenance of patient records, letter writing, billing and general upkeep of area.
Calls patients with their glasses are ready to be picked up.
Sends prescriptions to different laboratories and optical companies for filling.
Teaches patients how to insert/remove/care for contact lenses.
Call insurance companies or VSP to get authorization numbers for managed care patients.
Organizes frame inventory and displaces.
Collects payment from patients.
Performs other related duties as requested by the Optometrist.
Marginal Job Functions:
Pull and files charts daily.
Completes superbill and daily summary.
Calls patients to remind of next day appointments or yearly eye exams.
Ability to type, file, maintain accurately and do simple accounting procedures.
High school graduation or equivalency required.
Ability to work well with patients of all ages.
Ability and desire to be trained for professional Optometric Assistant duties.
With optometric assistant experience in the field.
Optical experience a plus, but willing to train.
