GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Each year, Earthwatch Institute awards expedition fellowships to students and teachers around the United States through a competitive application process. These fellowships have included a successful annual initiative—the Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP)—generously funded over the years by The Durfee Foundation. This position will focus on recruiting “rising star” high school students of Los Angeles County for the 2013 SCAP program.

This individual will be responsible for targeted outreach to a core group of Los Angeles County schools (identified by Earthwatch and the Durfee Foundation). The applicant will be required to travel to different schools within Los Angeles County to leverage existing and develop new networks and relationships with key constituencies in targeted communities. The ability to take initiative, clearly communicate goals of the program and steward important relationships with schools, students and educators in Los Angeles County are essential components of this position.

MAJOR DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of Earthwatch’s Regional West Coast Director—and in close coordination with the organization’s Marketing and Program Departments—this position will proactively lead the second year of Earthwatch’s Los Angeles fellowship outreach and recruitment efforts.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include, but are not limited to:

Networking and recruitment activities:
 Outreach to a core group of public and private high schools in Los Angeles County.
 Follow up and effective outreach to contacts and relationships made on the ground by Earthwatch’s Regional West Coast Director responsible for the program’s fund raising.
 Development and tracking of contacts made via Earthwatch’s data management system.
 Dedicated reporting to Earthwatch’s West Coast Director and Senior Program Manager to monitor applicants for the pilot mindful of the key December deadlines.

Marketing:
 Identification of advertising opportunities in educational publications (to be coordinated with Earthwatch’s Marketing Department)
 Follow-up with leads/inquiries generated via phone, email, etc.

Travel:
This position will involve frequent local travel across Los Angeles County. Gas mileage will be reimbursed. Cell phone usage will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $75 per month. Earthwatch will provide 50% coverage of home internet connection.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education: B.A. preferred and/or equivalent work experience

Experience: Candidates must have:

  • a background in education and knowledge of the Los Angeles County School system
  • a background in recruitment or marketing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Candidates must have:

  • Ability to initiate intensive promotion of the program in Los Angeles.
  • Proficiency with database management and online networking
  • The willingness to manage outreach events
  • The ability to work independently with remote management
  • Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills.
  • Strong writing skills
  • Internet Access
  • Car and Drivers License

PAY GRADE OR SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Non Exempt Contract Labor (5 months, $25/hr: August – December 2012), Flexible work schedule based on timeline for the program.
