The Utilities-Electric Operations Department is looking for an Overhead Underground Troubleman. The primary responsibilities of this Journey Level position is emergency response and customer complaint investigations. The incumbent will be responsible for maintenance and minor repairs to overhead and underground electric systems. Responds to customer and voltage complaints, disruption of service, and outages to the system. Works closely with the Customer Service Department providing removal, installation of services and meters. Also works with other departments to set up voltage/amperage testing equipment. Incumbent will be required to work 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday either the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift or the 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Incumbents in this class must have a minimum of 5 yrs experience as a journey level lineperson/cablesplicer. The Overhead / Underground Troubleman classification is found in the Utilities Department, Electric Operations division and works under supervision of a Division Head or other supervision as assigned.
The Overhead / Underground Troubleman can be distinguished from the Lineperson/Cable Splicer in that the incumbent does not work under direct supervision and is expected to exercise moderate independent judgment. This classification can further be distinguished from the Lineperson Cable Slicer in that the incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical systems rather than the building and construction of electrical systems.
This Overhead / Underground Troubleman can be distinguished from the Lead Lineperson/Cable Splicer in that this incumbent is not responsible for leading a crew.

Essential Duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following;
  • Answers, investigates and corrects trouble calls involving electric distribution, and street lighting.
  • Advises system operator of nature of trouble and the material and personnel required to correct the situation.
  • Installs and removes test equipment.
  • Performs visual inspections on substations.
  • Handles line, underground and substation switching and line patrolling.
  • Makes electric turn-ons and turn-offs.
  • Investigates trouble calls related to the supply of power to the water system.
  • Collects deposits and bills.
  • Sets up necessary emergency safety devices for various City facilities and situations.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Work alone as may be necessary in connection with providing and maintaining electric service to the public.
  • Required to work 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday either the 7 a.m.- 3 p.m.
    shift or the 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift.

  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and.or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.
  • Five years of journey level experience as a Lineworker, including electrical service work.
  • Special Requirements:
  • Possession of an appropriate valid California Class A driver's license is required, or possession of a valid Class C license at the time of employment and the ability to obtain Class A within six months of employment.
  • Rubber glove certification, administered by the City, in compliance with Title 8 - Electric Safety Orders.
