Job Description:
The Painter in the position described herein is charged with the responsibility of maintaining and improving the physical appearance of the interior and exterior of the Department of Housing and Residence Education buildings. S/he is directly responsible to Maintenance Supervisor and indirectly to the Maintenance Services Senior Superintendent and Director of Housing and Residence Education for Facilities Management.

This position requires

  • Knowledge of painting and wallpapering techniques (including, but not limited to, knowledge of how to select, use, maintain, and clean brushes, rollers, spray guns, and wallpapering tools)
  • Knowledge of proper storage procedures for paint and related supplies
  • Painting skills (including, but not limited to, using appropriate materials, supplies, and preparation)
Paints the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, equipment, piping, and other forms using brush, roller, and/or airless sprayer

Prepares work areas and surfaces for painting utilizing patching compounds, spackling, caulking, sanding, sealers, primers, and paint

Operates and maintains power washers

Operates high reach equipment; erects and uses extension ladders, scaffolding, and other related equipment

Applies waterproofing and sealers

Assists other trades in maintaining student residential buildings and equipment

Performs installation and repair of floor coverings, i.e. carpet, carpet padding, or vinyl floor coverings

Performs minor roof repairs and roof maintenance

Performs other related functions as directed by supervisor

Performs a variety of minor plumbing repairs (including on faucets and toilets)

Minimum Requirements:
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in painting; or a high school diploma and three years of appropriate experience. Appropriate vocational/ technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of painting and wallpapering techniques
  • Knowledge of how to select, use, maintain, and clean brushes, rollers, spray guns, and wallpapering tools
  • Knowledge of proper storage procedures of the different types of paints, thinners, and related supplies
  • Skill in using paint brushes, rollers, spray guns, and wallpapering tools
  • Skill in preparing surfaces for painting
  • Skill in mixing paints and allied products
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively
