To act as a primary provider of laboratory services in the designated service area requiring specialized knowledge, practice, expertise and high visibility and interaction. To serve as a practitioner, educator/role model for fellows, residents, and staff members. It is the role of the Pathologist’s Assistant to continuously interact and consult with the surgical pathology section director(s), laboratory director(s), section supervisors or designees. The area of specialized knowledge includes: describes, dissects, and submits samples of human surgical specimens; and is directed to assume other responsibilities including administrative, supervisory and teaching.

Responsibilities:

* Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

* Under the indirect supervision of a pathologist(s), selects, describes gross anatomic features, and dissects tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Assures appropriate specimen accessioning.

* Photographs all pertinent specimens as directed by the pathologist(s).

* Responsible for assuring proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology area.

* Coordinates quality assurance and quality improvement activities for the department. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and maintains a laboratory of constant inspection readiness.

* Instructs, orients and mentors students, employees, residents, patients and other health care providers as applicable. Completes continuing education and submits appropriate documentation where applicable.

* Orients and cuts tissue using frozen section microtomy techniques that ensures section is full face, proper thickness and free of cutting artifact. Completes frozen section according to turnaround time as defined by College of American Pathologist.

* At the direction of the pathologist(s), director(s) or designee is assigned duties relating to resident and fellow training, administrative, maintenance of surgical pathology protocols.

* Ensures all departmental policies and procedures are kept up to date.

* Under direct supervision of the pathologist(s), assists in the preparation and performance of human postmortem examinations which may include: external examination, in situ inspections, evisceration, dissection, and dictation of data and gross anatomic findings.

Requirements:

* Minimum of a baccalaureate degree with a major or minor in a biological allied health science.

* Must be a fellow of the AAPA and have successfully passed the AAPA written examination.

* Must be an active member of the AAPA.

* Must be certified or eligible for certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
