- Purpose of Job: The purpose of the Patient Registration Specialist is to perform inpatient, outpatient, Emergency Department registration and pre-registrations in a timely and accurate manner, while complying with Federal regulations such as HIPAA and EMTALA. This position provides verification of insurance, collects patient payments, assists in the authorization process as required and performs other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities: Interviews patients for the purpose of entering confidential patient insurance and demographic information into the STAR system and scheduling them into the Tempus One application; collects complete and accurate demographic and financial information while in compliance with federal regulations such as HIPAA and EMTALA; obtains signatures and information as required by regulatory agencies; assigns appropriate ICD-9 codes for registration and billing compliance purposes; verifies insurance eligibility by using all electronic systems available to them or verification by phone according to departmental policy; collects and verifies necessary authorizations as appropriate and possess' general knowledge of financial class requirements with regard to registration and insurance requirements; documents financial information in the accounts for billing purposes; educates the patient as to their financial responsibility prior to the point of service by providing the patient with cost estimates for services rendered; collects pre-payment or point of service payment for hospital services; operates multiple computer applications to register patients, enter radiology order, retrieve surgical information, testing information and financial information; serves as a liaison between Central Scheduling, Surgery Scheduling and the Pre-operative nursing staff; posses knowledge of insurance changes and works with Patient Financial Services to ensure accurate billing; assists in the quality control process to maintain a level of accuracy to produce an accurate claim; assist uninsured/under insured patients by screening for appropriate community resources such as Community Financial Aid, Medicaid, etc. that may be available to them in order to secure payment for the hospital; assists in training new Associates and reports progress to the Supervisor or Manager; accepts payments from internal departments and processes them according to departmental policy; cross-trained to be able to function at multiple campuses and with minimal supervision; accurately records and processes expirations by timely notification to funeral homes; serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of performance by respecting the privacy and confidentiality of those we serve; demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols defined under the HIPAA Privacy Policies; follows established HIPAA Privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information; and maintains and protects patients rights under the HIPAA Privacy standards.
Working Conditions: Sedentary use of the computer, telephone and filing; minimal exposure to blood and bodily fluids; minimum lifting of not more than 10 pounds required; requires pushing of 125 pound computer on wheels in certain registration locations; occasional exposure to latex environment; rare use of latex.
Requirements: High School diploma or completion of GED requirements; knowledge of health insurance coverage, policies and procedures and/or experience in patient billing, admitting or a related field; required computer keyboard experience of 50 WPM; required knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9 coding; demonstrated interpersonal communication skills and previous customer service experience, required.
