- Job Summary
- The Patient Care Assistant I will be responsible for assisting in meeting patient needs for all age groups (neonates, infant, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) in the areas of comfort, activities of daily living, clinical procedures as delineated, transporting and safety needs. The Patient Care Assistant I will communicate with team members in a timely manner about his/her observations of the patient's progress, needs and problems. Maintains established departmental/hospital policies, procedures, objectives, Performance Improvement and Patient Safety, and infection control. Works as a member of a unit based, multidisciplinary patient care team. Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principals by being aware of nursing council's activities so that outcome, goals and objectives of nursing are achieved.
- Accountability will be monitored through direct observations; achievement of team service goals including satisfaction, quality, and financial outcomes; and performance improvement activities. The provision of nursing care will be provided in an environment that embraces maximum participation by the staff.
- Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.
- Qualifications Required
- Must have completed a Nursing Assistant program or have Nursing Assistant experience
- Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, and follow written and verbal instructions. High School diploma/GED required.
- Related post-high school education preferred. (Examples: Unit Clerk, Medical Secretary, etc. or related course work.)
- CPR for Family and Friends or Heart Saver required or must acquire certification within orientation period, and maintain.
- CNA is preferred.
- At least one year experience direct care preferred.
- Experience dealing with public demonstrating excellent customer service skills required.
- Direct patient care experience preferred such as Nursing Assistant, Dietetics Representative, Physical Therapy Aide, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, etc.
- Knowledge, skills, abilities:
- Basic knowledge of growth and development relevant to the ages of the patients served.
- Basic knowledge of the diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.
- Ability to think critically and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.
- High level of interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with whom daily interactions must take place.
- High level of interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively as a team member on a team with varying levels of health care workers.
- Problem solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated traits of initiative and dependability required.
- Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.
- Philosophy of health care service is compatible with that of the mission of University Hospital.
- Physical Demands
- Ability to sit for extended time frames and move about the unit and organization.
- Sight - to read physician orders and other unit documentation
- Speech - to communicate with callers and other customers, and respond to intercom system
- Auditory - to hear patients, respond to call system and answer telephone
- Manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data, file, use telephone and intercom, etc.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, and reach above head.
- Ability to handle heavy materials or patients. Physical demands greater than moderate may require knowledge in the use of appropriate equipment. Frequent bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and pulling require use of proper body mechanics. Often it will be necessary for individual to stand for long periods and may spend most of the shift on feet. Requires close mental, visual, tactile, olfactory and auditory attention in all phases of patient care activities.
