Police Officer I performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The work in this class normally consists of routine patrol, preliminary investigations and traffic control duties in a designated area on an assigned shift. Patrol may be performed in a cruiser or on foot. Police Officers' I duties may involve an element of personal danger, and employees must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Incumbents may be assigned to work on special assignments as dispatchers, investigators, K-9 officers, plainclothes officers, identification technicians, community relations officers or training officers in order to develop the necessary specialized abilities and knowledge required at the Police Officer II level. Specific work assignments are made by a Police Sergeant or other superior, and work methods and results are checked through personal inspections, review of reports and discussions.

High School Diploma or GED; one year of work experience involving public contact under varying circumstances; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence. Candidates for this class are required to meet the minimum age and medical standards as established by the Human Resources Department. Good character and background are essential requirements.

Four-Year College Degree or equivalent work-related experience.
