The City is seeking service-oriented individuals to work in the Communications Center of the San Leandro Police Department, which operates seven days per week, 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. The position reports to an Administrative Specialist-Police and performs specialized technical and clerical duties. This position requires the ability to wear a uniform, work a rotating shift schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and be on call as needed. Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include, and may not be limited to, the following:
¨ Receiving 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatching Police Officers according to Departmental policy and procedures;
¨ Operating radio equipment and various criminal justice computer systems which require a high level of confidentiality;
¨ Receiving information from callers calmly and determining the nature of services requested; making sound decisions under stressful or emergency situations, and providing direction to callers in a clear and concise manner;
¨ Organizing and prioritizing work with minimal supervision;
¨ Quickly and accurately entering data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, which processes information and associated data on incidents; and
¨ Maintaining records and information as required.
To be considered for this position, an applicant must have the required experience, training, education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as stated below:
A high school diploma or equivalent; completed coursework in administration of justice or a closely related field is highly desired;
Recent work experience involving public contact in which good judgment, tact and effective written and verbal skills were clearly required. Training and experience in police-related work is highly desired;
Ability to keyboard at least 45 net words per minute (verified by a typing certificate valid within the last twelve months), and ability to use a persona l computer while compiling information over the phone with a sophisticated law enforcement automated dispatching system;
Ab ility to perform a number of cognitive processes, including and not limited to, thinking of a number of ideas or alternatives about a given incident, remembering information, comparing letters, numbers, objects, pictures or patterns quickly and accurately and choosing between two or more sources of information;
Ability to multi-task in the performance of daily duties;
Ability to make sound decisions in accordance with Departmental policies and procedures and possess outstanding verbal communication skills so that information transmitted is clear and concise;
Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to establish effective working relationships with the Police Department staff and other public agencies involved in law enforcement or criminal investigations;
Possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver’s license; and
Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the selected candidate must obtain a valid POST Basic Dispatcher certification.
SALARY AND BENEFITS : The current monthly salary range for this position is $4,749 - $5,772. Appointment may be made at any step within the range dependent upon the selected candidate’s training, education and experience. Refer to the benefits section tab located next to this job announcement.

Test location : Evergreen Valley College (The Academy), 3095 Yerba Buena Road, San Jose 95135, (408) 270-6458. This is a two hour test.
TYPING CERTIFICATE: T yping certificates will be accepted from recognized businesses, adult schools or employment agencies. Internet typing certificates WILL NOT be accepted. Typing certificates MUST contain the following information:
Ø Name of agency
Ø Gross words per minute
Ø Length of test (must be at least 3 minutes in duration)
Ø Total number of errors
Ø Net speed/corrected rate (must be 45 wpm or greater)
Ø Date and signature of authorized agency personnel
Based on a review of the application materials, a limited number of the best qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process, which will include a qualifying written examination, a structured oral board interview, written exercise, or other elements determined by the City to be appropriate.
The selected candidate will be subjected to a background investigation which will include, but not limited to, a personal history assessment, criminal history check, financial background check, polygraph and psychological testing (when assigned to the Police Department).
There is an eighteen-month probationary period which is an integral part of the selection process and is used to observe and evaluate the employee’s ability to effectively and responsibly perform the duties of the position.

VETERANS’ PREFERENCE : If applying for first-time employment with the City of San Leandro within five years of separation from full-time active service, veteran’s preference points will be given to honorably discharged veterans who served a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time active service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Candidates must receive an overall passing score in order to qualify for the application of veteran’s preference, which will result in a three percent increment to that passing score. Applicants wishing to qualify must, prior to the application deadline, attach or provide a DD Form 214 as proof of eligibility for the veterans’ preference.
