Colgate-Palmolive Company invites applications for Packaging Engineer. This position is part of the Global Design & Packaging Organization supporting the North America Personal Care Category. This position is responsible for the development and engineering of new, innovative packaging solutions, collaboratively with Global and Regional Marketing, Supply Chain and Manufacturing. Responsibilities include:
  • Lead the conceptualization, initiation, development and implementation of new and improved packages and processes including: design generation, prototype development, engineering specifications, mold and machinery qualification, functionality and quality testing, and technology transfer. May lead multi-functional teams in some of these projects
  • Lead the design of packaging systems and packaging components, ensuring defined needs for ergonomics, equity aesthetics, consumer acceptance, manufacturing capability and quality are met from the program brief through design, engineering and Commercialization
  • Implement standardization and simplification programs, and margin improvement projects
  • Interface with Global Business Development, Divisional/Subsidiary Management and packaging partners, Product Development R&D, and other functions as needed to ensure project meets agreed upon goals. Continuously assess and communicate project results vs. goals and take corrective action when required
  • Identify and provide rationale for funds needed to successfully deliver project goals
  • Understand, interpret and refine package testing procedures and standards to support the effective design, validation, and implementation of new packages and packaging technology. Provide meaningful explanations and forward actions to appropriate Division/Subsidiary personnel
  • Write and present technical and business summaries for both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Build competitive advantage by identifying, evaluating, and championing technical advancements, design trends and innovations in packaging. Stay aware of supplier and competitor new developments, and highlight to appropriate management as needed
  • Develop, justify and execute capital projects related to packaging (i.e. molds/machinery)
  • Coordinate line trials to ensure package performance for manufacturing. Attend component and manufacturing startups as needed to ensure proper execution of design & function.
  • Partner with plant engineering & contract manufacturers to ensure that packaging equipment/material system specifications, functionality and design are appropriate for use.
  • Write package component specifications, Bills of Materials, Manufacturing & Assembly Specifications, case/cube information
  • Approve artwork as needed
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications Required:
  • BS/BA degree in Package Engineering/Technology/Science or related engineering field (eg: Chemical/Mechanical Engineering)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working in package development/engineering
  • Self-starter with only minimal supervision needed also need to report concisely status to supervisor
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Innovation experience partnering with design and marketing
  • Material science knowledge of plastics (HDPE, PP, PET)
  • General understanding of printing methods and color tolerances for labels, printing and decoration techniques
  • Experience with PET & HDPE blow molded (Extrusion and Reheat Stretch Blow) bottles (manufacturing processes and troubleshooting)
  • Knowledge of filling line processes/specifications and troubleshooting
  • Experience with injection molding part and tool design & development, qualification and troubleshooting (eg: PET preforms, flip top caps)
  • Project Management skills with experience leading cross functional teams
  • Experience with statistical and predictive engineering tools (eg.: Design of Experiments (DOE), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Experience using statistics for material/tooling qualifications & validations and setting material specifications
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation of results using software such as Mini Tab
  • Basic understanding of quality processes such as AQL and inspection procedures such as Data Mike, caliper, micrometer, microscope etc. (some type of hands on experience with parts and measurements)
  • Experience initiating and leading continuous improvement teams and plans
  • Demonstrate strong documentation skills (eg: Test reports, specifications, etc.)
  • Experience using SAP or other ERP software and/or plant-related computer systems
  • Basic understanding of Process Excellence such as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control)
  • Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to work with diverse cultures and global partners
  • Good oral presentation skills to both peers as well as upper
  • Understanding how to plan and deal with interdependency of other projects
