Painter Technician - Maintenance
Position Information: Full Time, Hourly
Position Summary: Under general direction of Maintenance management, this position is responsible for executing painting activities on maintenance and construction projects for the Zoo, as well as other associated facilities duties as assigned.
Essential Functions (Including, but not limited to):
•Provides painting expertise on maintenance, construction, and events projects. Executes other maintenance and construction projects as assigned.
•Inspects and monitors facilities and equipment for maintenance, repair and /or replacement needs.
•Prepares and maintains records and reports.
•Supports other facility positions as needed for the successful operation/repair of Zoo related issues.
•Applies paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, and/or other structures, using appropriate tools such as brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
•Calculates amount of required materials and estimates costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.
•Reads work orders or receives instructions from supervisors in order to determine work requirements.
•Cuts stencils, and brush and spray lettering and decorations on surfaces.
•Erects scaffolding and swing gates, or set up ladders, to work above ground level.
•Selects and purchases tools and finishes for surfaces to be covered, considering durability, ease of handling, methods of application, and customers' wishes.
•Removes fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
•Removes old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water and/or abrasive blasting.
•Covers surfaces with dropcloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting. Removes all preparation materials at the conclusion of each project.
•Washes and treats surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
•Smooths surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.
•Fills cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
•Mixes and matches colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colors and consistencies.
•Uses special finishing techniques such as sponging, ragging, layering, or faux finishing.
•Sprays or brushes hot plastics or pitch onto surfaces.
•Applies primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
•Polishes final coats to specified finishes.
•Waterproofs buildings using waterproofers and caulking.
•Responsible for proper and safe use and maintenance of all equipment and tools. Maintains safe equipment use and ensures proper PPE use.
•In consideration for employee, guest, animal areas, ensures that areas are properly secured before commencement of a project. Minimizes project intrusion into employee, guest, and animal areas. Ensures that unavoidable intrusion will not result in unsafe conditions or injury.
•Other duties as assigned.
•High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
•Two years of related experience and/or training. Advance skills in or more technical areas.
•A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum educational requirements.
•Other desirable experience to include carpentry, plumbing, A/C, electrical, welding, machining, concrete work, rebar work and structural steel, instrumentation, pump repair/maintenance, amusement park ride repair/maintenance, and a mechanical background.
Skills and Experience:
•Knowledge of preparing and painting commercial buildings.
•Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
•Knowledge to perform a wide variety of building maintenance.
•Skilled in use, repair, and care of equipment pertinent to the performance of painting.
•Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
•Working knowledge of hand and power tools pertinent to painting and general shop duties.
•Motivated self-starter with strong organizational abilities.
•Must be able to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
•Effective communication skills.
•Ability to complete projects in a reasonable time frame to the complete satisfaction of zoo management.
•Deal courteously and tactfully with employees, peers, superiors and the general public.
•Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
•Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to west central Florida (i.e., heat, rain, or cold).
•Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
•Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays and weekends as needed.
•Must be able to plan for, work, and staff specials events and exhibits as well as be available for unexpected shifts.
•Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, standing, and walking.
