Provide paralegal assistance in a wide variety of legal matters pertaining to the organization including but not limited to litigation, corporate governance, intellectual property, and contracts. Assist attorneys with organizing, managing and maintaining a variety of corporate matters. Provide assistance in the preparation of legal documents, research and compilation of data from various legal references. Also provide assistance to attorneys in the preparation of drafts, contracts and maintenance of case filings and corporate record books
Essential Job Functions:
The incumbent must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities

Draft legal position statements for attorney review pertaining to various specific policies, operational practices, and/or transactions.
Conduct routine and specific legal and factual information research and data compilation.
Convey routine information to client representatives regarding legal and/or contractual issues associated with existing or proposed operational situations.
Draft and review services and merchandising contracts and other legal documents for consideration by attorneys and for ultimate adoption by the Company.
Compile, review, and organize evidence and other information for internal and external meetings and hearings, as appropriate. Coordinate the gathering of information, materials, documents, reports and evidence necessary to respond to discovery.
Coordinate the gathering of information from various departments in the preparation of contracts, other legal documents, and in formulating company’s legal position. Review certain contracts and other legal documents to ensure necessary provisions are included.
Manage domestic and international intellectual property registration program including correspondence with clients and foreign counsel or agents regarding prosecution and maintenance of trademark application and registration. Perform on-line trademark searches. Perform investigation for potential trademark infringements. Prepare and prosecute State and U.S. trademark applications; preparation of instructions for foreign trademark filings and oversees prosecution.
Summarize depositions and other legal documents.
Prepare reports, correspondence and memoranda of law and other documents.
Perform cite checking, shepardizing and legal research both manually and through use of electronic resources such as Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw.
Communicate regularly with attorneys to inform them of the status of projects and client matters. Inform them of pertinent issues. Track deadlines to ensure schedules are met.
Interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with all professional contacts including but not limited to internal and external attorneys, court employees, vendors, customers and all levels of Petco associates with emphasis on company interests.
Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes. Prepare accurate and complete work products.
Utilize general knowledge of the law to analyze data and situations to assist attorneys in making appropriate decisions in the best interest of the Company.
Occasionally travel day or overnight via plane or car.
The nature of this position entails periodic project management of non-exempt staff in the Law Department and exempt and non-exempt level staff cross-functionally. The incumbent may also provide direction to consultants and outside counsel on certain projects.
The majority of work is performed in an office environment and a small portion of time may be spent traveling via airplane and/or automobile.
A college degree is required plus three to five years of progressively responsible paralegal experience in a corporate or law firm environment. Must have strong knowledge of general legal terminology and legal principles and intellectual property principles. Must have demonstrated strong ability to perform legal research; to draft form pleadings ,discovery and services contracts; to use modern office equipment, including MS Word software and electronic resource tools such as Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw. Must have exceptional ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to negotiate effectively; to interview associates; vendors and customers. Must be able to prepare accurate and complete work products; organize and prioritize workload and meet multiple coinciding deadlines; understand and follow written and oral directions and establish and maintain effective working relations with others. A paralegal certification from an accredited paralegal program is required.
