PARALEGAL

Provide litigation support services to include, but not limited to the following:

1. Based on the nature of the particular legal issue or case, prepares a variety of substantive legal documents . These documents are drafted for review and approval of AUSA staff prior to issue. Upon approval, processes documents and performs necessary follow-up.

Reviews and maintains inventory of documents and other materials produced pursuant to subpoena.

Conducts or assists with interviews of agents and potential witnesses to assist the AUSA in preparation for trial; reviews, summarizes and outlines grand jury and/or trial testimony to assist the AUSA in preparation for trial; researches, analyzes and summarizes relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases; and prepares digest of points of law involved; analyzes appellate records to isolate facts pertinent to distinct legal issues. Utilizes a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal proceedings, e.g electronic discovery.

Prepares and maintains a variety of trial-related documents, e.g. discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, trial subpoenas, by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and application of practical litigative experience.

2. Provides a variety of legal assistance and technical work requiring a specialized knowledge of processes, procedures, and practices to support legal activities. Support assignments of this nature involve the form, content and issues of legal instruments and documents, and the steps and procedures involved in processing storing, and retrieving legal actions and legal information pertaining to the activities of the USAO. Characteristic assignments of this nature include one or more of the following:

Provides litigative case management and organizes cases for court presentation by preparing and organizing exhibits containing a variety of visual material, e.g. statistical charts and photographs. Notes deficiencies in case materials, e.g. , missing documents, conflicting statements, and request further investigation by investigative personnel to correct deficiencies, or personally conducts limited investigations at the pre-trial stage.

Maintains regular contact with law enforcement agencies to ensure provision of complete and timely cooperation in all aspects of assigned cases.

Monitors the progress of pending cases and initiates action to ensure that legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines. Keeps appropriate staff members informed about the current status of cases.

Compiles, organizes and indexes various discovery and evidence exhibits for trial, witness testimony as it relates to specific criminal charge evidence, and develops and compiles jury instructions to assist AUSA in preparing for trial. Works closely with assigned attorney(s) to ensure material is efficiently arranged.

Produces and provides to the attorney the appropriate legal documents, information, exhibits, or witnesses at the appropriate time during those court proceedings.

Prepares exhibits for trial which typically involves a wide range of visual materials including charts, diagrams, photographs and models. Depending on the nature and complexity of the case, personally prepares trial exhibits, or initiates preparation by other appropriate staff or contractors to ensure timely production prior to the trial date. Maintains accounting systems for materials to be used as exhibits dn trials, prepares lists and tables to correlate the exhibits with grand jury transcripts , and keeps a strict account of the exhibits used in such proceedings.

3. Performs a variety of administrative duties in support of the assigned AUSAs. Support assignments of this nature involve administrative support not of a strictly legal nature, but which typically involves automation support or other administrative subject-matter areas. Automation support may include one or more of the following:

Using one or more types of personal computer based software,,, i.e, word processing, spreadsheet, or database management, develops methods for automating reports, statistical data, text and graphics. Identifies user requirements, selects appropriate software, and establishes detailed functional procedures needed to enter and to retrieve data for other application users.

Using established databases, performs data searches, report design, and other data retrieval assignments. Reports may be of a recurring nature or of a special, one-time nature based on user information requirements

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:
Requires paralegal certificate.

At least one year of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful.

Automated litigation support experience very helpful.

Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform basic legal research.

Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and WestLaw.

Should have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, imaging, and telecommunications.

Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of litigation paralegal experience
