This position performs paralegal and paraprofessional duties in support of the Town’s legal staff including conducting research and drafting legal documents

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinates and performs a variety of professional paralegal duties; researches legal issues and provides litigation support
Prepares routine legal documents and contracts; prepares written reports for internal and external audiences; tracks legal documents, and routes to appropriate parties, tracks, and updates legal information
Examines legal documents, verifies accuracy and completeness, tracks deadlines and processing requirements and advises attorneys of legal timetables and deadlines
Establishes, maintains and updates complex files and case files
Provides litigation support through preparation of certain pleadings, discovery, scheduling of hearings, calendaring of response deadlines and court dates; researches and analyzes a variety of sources such as statutes, ordinances, court decisions, legal documents and articles for use in preparing legal documents, opinions, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, briefs and pleadings
Assists with case preparation by compiling and assembling files and required materials.
Reviews contracts, ordinances, resolutions, policies and other legal documents for proper form, accuracy and completeness
Drafts routine legal documents under direct attorney supervision
Responds to routine information requests from other departments and the public
Manages the department’s law library
May act in a lead capacity on special projects and assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
Computer applications such as document management, case management, calendaring and word processing
Principles of business letter writing and report preparation
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
Legal terminology and forms and documents used in the field
Legal office methods, procedures, terminology and documents
Related federal, state and municipal laws codes and regulations
Town ordinances policies and procedures
Legal research procedures and forms
Court rules and procedures
Standard legal references and their contents
Basic public entity law library
Principles and methodologies for filing systems and case management
Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers Ability to:
Understand, interpret, and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures as well as pertinent laws, regulations, and ordinances
Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals
Locate various legal references including statutes, codes, regulations, and citations
Effectively research and extract pertinent data from a variety of sources in the preparation of legal cases and documents
Independently prepare correspondence and memoranda
Organize and prioritize work flow; work independently in the absence of supervision; exercise good judgment and make sound decisions; maintain confidentiality,
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Examine real property titles
Effectively operate a computer.
Physical Demands The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. Work Environment The work is typically performed in an office environment. Minimum Qualifications An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job Education A high school diploma or its equivalent Experience Two years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant Certifications, Licenses, Registrations A Paralegal or Legal Assistant certificate from an accredited institution recognized by the American Bar Association
