Purpose of the Work Unit: To provide legal advice, representation and support for the University of Colorado, including its four campuses and system administration. This position exists to provide administrative, and legal support services for the Office of University Counsel, primarily in the litigation and Denver campus offices and Professional Risk Management.

Posting Description
The office of University Counsel is currently seeking a Paralegal. Specific responsibilities include:

-Provides legal and administrative support to the University of Colorado Denver’s Office of University Counsel and to the Professional Risk Management department at the Anschutz Medical Campus.
-Analyzes the University of Colorado Self-Insurance and Risk Management Trust’s coverage document to confirm malpractice coverage for Anschutz Medical Campus faculty and answers routine questions from faculty and administrators about malpractice coverage issues.
-Conducts employment and coverage verifications for medical providers named in a Notice of Claim.
-Initiates legal holds by identifying data custodians, drafting memorandums and working with IT personnel to preserve claims related data.
-Requests, collects and organizes medical records and other documents to aid risk managers and attorneys in the investigation of claims.
-Coordinates the exchange of information between outside counsel and the Attorney General’s office to obtain Special Assistant Attorney General designations as necessary.
-Assists in the preparation of Letters of Engagement for outside firms aiding the University in legal representation.
-Works from the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado two to three days per week.
-Performs legal research regarding medical malpractice and prepares memorandums and documents.

50% Litigation and General Liability Support

-Provides legal and administrative support to the Litigation Department in the Office of University Counsel.
-Initiates legal holds by identifying data custodians and data repositories.
-Drafts memorandums and works with IT personnel to preserve claims related data.
-Assists in the collection, culling, organizing, indexing and presentation of data.
-Ensures standard procedures for discovery are consistently applied, monitored and adjusted as necessary.
-Drafts and edits letters, memos, pleadings and discovery responses.
-Analyzes court pleadings related to University litigation and administrative law matters.
-Assists with deposition, hearing and trial preparations.
-Ensures compliance with the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
-Performs legal research.
-Other duties as assigned.
-Works from the litigation office in downtown Denver two to three days per week.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher education level or equivalent specialized experience.
- Typing speed of 50 wpm or faster.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- 5+years prior legal assistant or paralegal experience.
- 2+years prior medical malpractice or workers compensation or personal injury experience.
- 2+years prior civil litigation experience.
- 2+years prior experience with Lexis/Nexis or ICCES electronic case filing software.
- 2+years prior experience with Pacer/ ECF federal electronic case filing software.
- Familiarity with the EDRM and e-discovery processes.
- Advanced knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and the Colorado Court Rules.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and under pressure, to manage multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities, and to deal with changing priorities.
- Demonstrated high level of commitment to customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, constituents, and the public.
-Proficiency working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint software applications.
-Proficiency working with Westlaw, WestNext or Lexis Nexis for legal research.
-This position interacts with a wide range of University constituents. The individual in this position must present themselves professionally at all times in both their appearance and their demeanor.
-The individual in this position is required to adhere to the highest level of confidentiality at all times.

Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and abilities

Desired Qualifications
-Paralegal certificate.
-Prior experience in higher education.
-Prior experience working with Viewpoint e-discovery software or an equivalent.
-Prior experience working with Peoplesoft software.
-Prior experience working with Law ToolBox case docketing software or an equivalent.
-Prior experience working with Legal Files case management software or an equivalent.
-Prior experience working with Epic medical records software or an equivalent.
-Colorado Notary Public.
-Prior experience in employment law.

Salary and Benefits: The salary for this position is $50,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with skills and experience.
