High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Summary: Responsible for patient care of assigned patients, under the direction of the Emergency Department Medical Director and Nurse Director of Emergency Services.

Responsibilities: Observes assigned patients and immediately reports changes in patient condition to the RN. Demonstrates knowledge of safety needs of population served (ie: cribs, restraints, fall precautions, toy use, infant identification). Takes and records vital signs to include Temperature, Pulse, Respiration’s, and Blood pressure. Applies knowledge of growth and development; provides adequate and appropriate explanations for age of group served. Observes assigned patients and immediately reports changes in patient condition to the RN. Demonstrates knowledge of safety needs of population served (ie: cribs, restraints, fall precautions, toy use, infant identification). Takes and records vital signs to include Temperature, Pulse, Respiration’s, and Blood pressure. Provides airway support to include oral/nasal airway, endotracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway (LMA). Performs 12 lead EKG’s, applies cardiac monitor, performs emergency defibrillation under the direction of the ED physician. Performs basic splinting and immobilization procedures using backboard/cervical collars. Performs glucose testing with MVH gluconometer. Sets up sterile trays (ie: suture, chest tube, etc). Performs basic wound cleaning and dressing. Applies and monitors pulse oximeters. Assists with resuscitation of patients with performance of CPR and documents patient care on the ED record. Inserts oral/naso gastric tubes and foley catheters on the order of the physician. Identifies potentially unsafe physical conditions and takes initiative to correct problem to prevent injury. Conforms behavior and actions to support quality service and excellent customer relations skills with patient, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and outside resource agencies. Checks patient’s name band to patient requisition to ensure proper identification of patient prior to performing any test or treatment. Demonstrates safe, correct, and cost effective use of supplies and equipment. Reviews Emergency Preparedness Plan; ED Fire/evacuation plan; and EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act). Performs needle cricothyrotomy, needle decompression, external jugular iv access, and interosseus therapy under the direct supervision of the ER MD. Administers medications via the following route: Oral, Sublinqual, Nebulizer, SQ, IM, rectal, ETT, and IV under the direct order of a physician. Administers patient care within job performance standards and academic/clinical preparation. Is able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the population served.

Qualifications:

High School graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an approved Paramedic training program. Current EMT - Paramedic certification. Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS certifications. BTLS certification, preferred. Minimum 2 years field experience preferred. Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Basic computer knowledge.
