Transport customers who are ambulatory and in a wheelchair to and from a medical facility by wheelchair van in a manner conductive to their safety and comfort and provide excellent customer service defined by the Company’s training program.
Job Knowledge :
Knowledge of paratransit operations and safety procedures and operation of equipment used in performing wheelchair transportation.
Must maintain a driver’s license valid in the state of residence.
Education: High School graduate or GED
Must be at least 21 y/o
Training and Experience: On-the-job training, excellent driving record and experience may be considered as beneficial.
Principle Duties and responsibilities:
A. Duties as a Driver:
Answer all paratransit calls efficiently. Driver must use diplomacy and tact at all times and be courteous and polite to the patient, his relations and friends, and all hospital personnel.
Ability and knowledge to communicate with the public and explain about the Company’s history, its services, employment requirements, etc.
Ability to operate Company wheelchair vans in such a manner as to maintain control of said vehicles at all times. The vehicle should be driven in such so as to not cause discomfort to the customer in a wheelchair. The ability to choose the best route to the destination or facility, considering conditions of the roads and patient comfort. Knowledge of all traffic regulations and speed limits.
Perform all wheelchair van driver duties as outlined in the Wheelchair Van Operations Manual (securing a customer in a wheelchair, safety procedures, transport procedures, using a wheelchair van lift, and providing excellent customer service) and by ADA specifications.
Assure vehicles are in required working conditions at all times. Report any defects or malfunctions to the Supervisor.
Assure vehicles are properly stocked and equipment is clean and in good working condition after each call.
Complete wheelchair van signature forms and all other required evaluation forms on all customer transports.
B. Other Related duties:
Maintain good relations and communication with all hospital and related health care personnel.
Work cooperatively with all staff personnel.
Make recommendations to the Supervisor as to how the quality of methods and procedures can be improved.
Adhere to safety, sanitation and housekeeping regulations in both the vehicles and bases of operations.
Attend annual paratransit training meetings concerning OSHA and operational procedures.
Perform other related duties as may be assigned or required.
Scope of Care:
If a medical emergency arises, the driver will pull the van over and notify dispatch immediately of his/her location and type of emergency. Provide the customer with First Aid until help arrives.
The Policy and Procedure Manual is recognized as the criteria for establishing proper procedures. It is the responsibility of the Driver to be familiar with these procedures by referring to the manual.
