Performs responsible semi-skilled work operating automotive or mechanical equipment in connection with the performance of a variety of public service work; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Job Functions*:

Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor; Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.; Ability to work outside under varying climatic conditions; Ability to sit and drive for extended periods. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and hazards.

Operates dump truck, loads and unloads dirt, stone, gravel, refuse, utility pipe and other materials; Operates riding and push mowers cutting and trimming grass; Operates tar distributor and asphalt roller in street repair; Operates a light truck in carrying tools, refuse equipment or supplies; Operates small backhoe; Operates sludge disposal, storage and transfer equipment; Operates a motor truck engaged in sanding icy streets and roads and snow removal; Services and performs minor repairs on automotive equipment; Operates truck, transports and works with crews engaged in repair, maintenance and custodial activities; Performs laborer duties and responsibilities; Assists with utility taps; Operates small equipment; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule.

Operates medium motorized equipment when needed or as a trainee.

Typical Qualifications:

General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventative maintenance of common automotive and mechanic equipment; Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; General knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operation; Ability to understand and follow instructions; Ability to set up word zone areas; Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; Ability to identify hazardous waste and material.

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.

Special License and Certificates:

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid class A commercial drivers license with department/division endorsements within six weeks of employment; May require ability to obtain confined space license; May require certification as a flagger.
