Law Enforcement Commission

Candidates must possess an NPS Level I or II Law Enforcement Commission, or have successfully completed an NPS seasonal law enforcement academy within the last 3 years before entering into this position. You must provide your Type I or II Commission Number or certificate of training by the closing of this announcement to be considered for this position.

Spanish Language Proficiency

Candidates must be conversationally fluent in the Spanish and English languages.

Other Conditions of Employment

This is a required occupancy position. Incumbents must live in government housing.

Must wear the NPS uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards including PPE (body armor) and law enforcement equipment. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.

Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain certification (red card) as a Type II Wildland Firefighter, which includes passing a work capacity test (pack test) and complete S130/190 training.

Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday by the appointment date of this position. (Exception: This age restriction does not apply to those who have previously served in a Federal civilian (not military) firefighter/law enforcement position covered by title 5 U.S.C. section 8336 provisions or for those who are entitled to veterans' preference if otherwise qualified and meet medical and fitness requirements. You must submit proof of your veterans' preference.)

KEY REQUIREMENTS

You must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for consideration.

Must have a valid state driver's license and operate a motorized vehicle.

Minimum (21) and maximum (36) age requirements must be met.

Must pass a drug screen.

Must pass a background investigation and carry fire arms.

Must pass a medical standards exam and physical efficiency battery.

DUTIES:
Major Duties:
The purpose of this position is to provide training and experience in the work involved in the Resource Protection and Public Use Management Program of parks.

Protecting Big Bend's natural and cultural resources by enforcing laws

Preventing, deterring, and investigating crimes

Educating the public about Big Bend's resources and the requirements for their use

Providing safety and security for Big Bend's visitors, park staff, and the public

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for the GS-05 Federal grade level, applicants must have one of the following:

A. Completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR
B. At least one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service or similar pay system. Examples of specialized experience include performing a variety of training or developmental assignments in resource protection and public use management that involved detecting, investigating, apprehending, arresting and prosecuting violators of a variety of law enforcement acts, laws, rules and regulations; investigating criminal activity pertaining to natural resource management and related laws and regulations; educating, interpreting, and providing accurate and current information to visitors; managing park resources or recreation activities; making presentations and/or instructing classes; and providing emergency medical services, boat operations and search and rescue.

OR
C. Less than the full amount of education described in "A" and less than the full amount of experience described in "B," but have a combination of the type of education described in "A" and the type of experience described in "B." To compute, first determine your total qualifying education as percentage of that described in "A"; then, determine your total qualifying specialized experience as a percentage of that described in "B." Add the two percentages. The total percentage equal to at least 100 percent.

To qualify for the GS-07 Federal grade level, applicants must have one of the following:

A. A bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources AND meet one of the following requirements for Superior Academic Achievement at the undergraduate level: 1) Class standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university of major of major subdivision; 2) A Grade Point Average - 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 scale based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. (Submit a copy of your transcripts or documented proof of class standing or honor society membership).

OR

B. One full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level study, or possess a master's or higher degree, e.g., Ph.D., in the fields described in "A" above. (Submit a copy of your transcripts).

OR

C. At least one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service or similar pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include protecting a park's natural and cultural resources by enforcing laws; preventing, deterring, and investigating crimes; educating the public about a park's resources and the requirements for their use; and providing safety and security for park visitors, park staff, and the public.

OR

D. Less than the full amount of graduate education described in "B" and less than the full amount of specialized experience described in "C," but an equivalent combination of the type of graduate education described in "B" and the type of specialize experience described in "C." To calculate qualifying combinations, determine the amount of qualifying graduate education you have as a percentage of the requirement stated in "B," and determine the amount of qualifying specialized experience you have as a percentage of the requirement stated in "C." Add the two percentages. The combination must equal 100 percent to qualify.

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must be free of any domestic violence convictions. If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, it is a felony for you to possess any firearm or ammunition. As a condition of employment, you are required to carry weapons and ammunition as a part of your official duties. Therefore, an individual with a conviction of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence will not be eligible.

Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service (see www.sss.gov ).

You may be subject to a background/suitability investigation.

You may be required to serve a one year probationary period.

May be required to be away from home in a travel status 1 to 5 nights per month.

Incumbent will be assigned to work nights, early mornings, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.

Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain certification (red card) as a Type II Wildland Firefighter, which includes passing a work capacity test (pack test) and complete S130/190 training.

Must possess or be able to obtain an NPS Structural Fire certification.

Must possess or be able to obtain National Registry Basic Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Must wear the National Park Service uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards including PPE (body armor) and law enforcement equipment. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
