Responsible for safeguarding the park areas, facilities and persons using the parks. Must encourage compliance with all City rules and regulations, City ordinances, and state statutes. Work is reviewed by the Chief Park Ranger.
Functions & Duties:
As Park Ranger:
Enforce all park rules and regulations in a tactful manner.
Provide information such as available facilities and activities, park usage rules, etc.
Make scheduled rounds of City parks to provide surveillance and identify individuals trespassing after closing hours.
Attend to emergency situations and performs minor first aid.
Follow proper emergency procedures in the event of a serious incident.
Perform light maintenance duties.
Clear paved areas of debris, branches and other obstructions.
Work with civic organizations and sports leagues to coordinate schedules for fields and courts usage under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.
Check facilities to ensure lights have been turned off and buildings secured.
Operate vehicles, two-way radios and other equipment.
Notify the proper authorities when necessary of violations.
Assist authorities to extent permitted.
May issue citations for parking, litter, and minor violations.
Maintain logs and prepares incident reports.
Work closely with the Broward Sheriff’s Office personnel.
Supervise the work of community service workers assigned to Parks.
Demonstrate impeccable customer service.
Ensure all pavilions have correct and accurate permits.
Assist with all special events.
Performs other duties that may be assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. from a recognized institution.
Associate’s Degree or two (2) years college coursework in Recreation or Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice preferred.
Certified in CPR and First Aid. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of first aid principles and methods and skills in their application.
Knowledge of park buildings and grounds, and rules and regulations.
Possess valid state of Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays.
May be required to be certified in Traffic Enforcement and Parking.
Possess excellent customer service skills. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum of two (2) years experience with five (5) years experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Security and / or military or law enforcement background with experience in parks preferable.
SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with trespassers and violators of City ordinance, safety and park rules.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and employees.
Must deal tactfully but firmly to maintain order within the parks.
Ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations and react quickly and calmly with an effective course of action.
Ability to work outside under varying climatic conditions.
Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
Ability to answer requests for information concerning the park in an intelligent and comprehensive manner.
Must have computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
Ability to operate a two-way police radio and motor vehicle.
Ability to walk several hours during assigned shift.
Ability to maintain simple records and logs.
Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
Must be able to work nights and weekends.
Must be able to work in all types of weather, with exposures to radiant energy.
A person in this position must be able to walk, sit, climb ladders, kneel, bend, reach, push and pull approximately 25 pounds for a short distance; handle, feel and grasp tools, machinery and equipment.
May be exposed to toxic fumes or work near moving mechanical equipment.
Must be able to read and understand instructions.
