The City of Modesto is seeking applications from qualified candidates for Parks Maintenance Crewleader. Parks Maintenance Crewleaders are working Crewleaders who work alongside assigned personnel engaged in parks maintenance and vegetation management of City right-of-ways. They organize, assign and review the work of crews and perform duties requiring specialized knowledge. They also provide administrative support to the assigned supervisor.
This is an advanced journey level in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of duties assigned, the independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, and by the nature of the interactions with others. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing technical and/or functional supervision over assigned personnel, inspecting park facilities and equipment for compliance with safety requirements, and coordinating the maintenance needs for City parks and outdoor recreational facilities. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.

Applicants considered to be the most qualified will be invited to continue in the testing process, which will consist of a written exam, practical exam, and oral board exam. The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in the application and in response to the supplemental questions attached to this application will be used in determining who is the most qualified to compete in the testing process. Essential Functions :
Plan, prioritize and review the work of staff assigned to a variety of park and recreational facility maintenance activities and programs.
Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications.
Provide and coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
Coordinate and perform landscape maintenance activities; identify landscape areas needing repair and maintenance and take corrective action.
Evaluate sites to be treated with pesticides to determine the most effective method of vegetation management; provide direction to field crews in the application of pesticides, weed abatement and bare ground clean up.
Apply chemicals for the use of rodent control and sport field and park turf renovations.
Coordinate a variety of park maintenance, repair and reconstruction related work.
Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the City's irrigation system; change and adjust heads; maintain controllers and assist in large irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
Perform inspections on playground equipment, parks, sports fields, pools, and other areas to ensure that park areas are safe and in compliance with safety standards and requirements for intended use; report vandalism or other repair needs.
Ensure that assigned employees are working with proper safety equipment and using proper techniques; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated work; assist in maintaining time, material and equipment use records.

Assist in coordinating park maintenance services activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies.
Operate park maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, front loaders, and power tools such as mowers, edgers and blowers; identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Perform the most difficult duties pertaining to park maintenance or pesticide application.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Two years of responsible journey experience equivalent to Maintenance Worker II with the City of Modesto. Experience performing park maintenance and construction is highly desirable.
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate
Most assignments require the possession of a valid Class B driver’s license including specified endorsements within 60 days of appointment. Failure to obtain the license within this period and/or failure to pass the federally mandated DOT drug/alcohol test after obtaining the license may result in release from probation.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mobility : frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long period of time; frequent bending and squatting. Lifting : frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds. Vision : constant use of overall vision. Dexterity : frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking : frequent hearing and talking in person. May be required to wear ear protection or hear in noisy conditions. Emotional/ Psychological : frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances.
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to typical street or field noise and environment including exposure to loud equipment and machinery. Some work may occur at remote locations. Positions may require occasional overtime and weekend work and travel is rare.
Note that positions in this class may be subject to assignment of weekend work during the summer months and may not be able to schedule vacation at that time.
