Hours: PRN Testing required for this position: Written test (a study guide is available at www.mccanntesting.com); EMS specific physical agility test; skills testing consisting of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians recognized skills; and an oral interview. Job Summary: Responds to all medical emergencies and performs all duties necessary to provide adequate medical care to patients in a pre-hospital setting and to assist Paramedics in all aspects of pre-hospital care. Essential Functions: Regular and timely attendance at work. Communicate with dispatchers via two-way radio. Navigate to incidents using maps and mobile data terminals. Drive ambulance to emergency incidents and to hospital if transport is needed. Perform basic life support procedures to the ill and critically injured. Perform all National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician skills at the EMT level. Perform vehicle inspections and minor maintenance to equipment. Inventory equipment and supplies on ambulance and restock as needed. Assist with lifting, carrying, and otherwise transporting patients to and from ambulance. Operate standard EMS equipment to include stretchers, backboards, stair chairs, AED's, suction devices, and other equipment commonly found on an ambulance. Carry medical bags and equipment. Document patient care in appropriate format using proper medical terminology. Act as an advocate for patients. Communicate with the public, EMS customers, and City employees concerning EMS questions and problems. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending continuing education and department meetings. This position is designated as "essential personnel" and in the event of any natural or man-made disaster is required to be available for immediate call-in. This will include any event the EMS Chief/City Manager deems necessary Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned. Education, Experience, and Licenses: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Minimum of two (2) years experience previous to application preferred. Valid Class C Texas Driver's License. EMT-Basic Requirements: Current and valid Texas Department of Health Certification as an EMT with Basic Life Support, and Basic Trauma Life Support Certification. (Provide copies with application) EMT-Intermediate Requirements: Current and valid Texas Department of Health Certification as an EMT-Intermediate, International Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support or similar certification preferred. (Provide copies with application) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of emergency medical methods, practices, and procedures. Thorough knowledge of BLS procedures. Thorough knowledge of EMS protocols. Thorough knowledge of City geography. Considerable knowledge of EMS practice. Ability to plan, coordinate, and direct the work of others. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to deal courteously, but firmly, with the public on especially difficult and sensitive issues. Ability to analyze complex situations and to formulate and direct quick, effective, and reasonable course of action with regard to hazards and circumstances. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position will be required to be available for immediate call-in due to any natural or manmade disaster, or any event the EMS Chief/City Manager deems necessary.
