Chhaya Community Development Corporation (Chhaya) seeks an experienced ESOL instructor for its newly launched Economic Development Program to lead English classes, and to help students achieve their professional career goals. The ESOL instructor will closely work with South Asian and other immigrant clients to develop their comprehension, reading and writing skills, while keeping a steady focus on job readiness preparation. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are committed to working with immigrant communities and to assist with significant long-term economic development.This position will require an estimated 15-20 hours of workweek to implement twice weekly 2-hour class sessions.The perfect candidate is collegial, able to multi task and works well in a small office that is fast paced and dynamic. A self starter, the candidate is reliable and results orientated.
Responsibilities:
Instruct adult ESOL students (Beginner & Intermediate level) in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational & career goals (reading, listening, speaking, writing)
Prepare curriculum and lesson plans for instructional sessions with Hospitality & Customer
Service context and adapt curriculum to student needs and interests
Prepare appropriate lesson plans, student goals,activities and homework assignments and follow student progress
Aid students’ professional development at all times by aiding them with job related comprehension skills
Assist in the managed enrollment process to maintain student records including attendance and evaluation records
Maintain attendance records, administer standardized pre-test and post-test assessment, track student progress over duration of a semester
Implement necessary activities, assessments and goals in collaboration with an Employment Specialist to increase student’s professional development capacity
Participate in organization-wide efforts and initiatives supported by the center staff
Note:Weekend and evening hours will be required, and compensated for with flexible hours.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required, with 1-2 years combination of training, internship and/or work experience in ESOL.
NYS TESOL certification highly preferred
Experience teaching and/or working with low-income immigrant adults, South Asian population or previous experience working in workforce development or social services capacity preferred
Strong desire to enhance long-term literacy and economic well-being of underserved populations
Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work well in a team situation and in a diverse environment
